a trust is supposed to manage property in the interest of its owner. If, lets say, I had fled lower Manhattan, and the govt of the USA was holding in trust for me a motel 6, and someone proposed to tear it down and build a skyscraper, the trust would have an OBLIGATION to tear the motel down, and lease the land out, and put the money back in the trust. OTOH if it was Trinity Church (in lower Manhattan) one could see where there could be different rules.

No, no. Carry on, by all means.

I disagree. Generic arguments about the value of Islamic civilization are hold hat, and I doubt we'll see anything new. Bore me again, spin the emotion and ignorance anew (and thats not to favor either side).
Whereas a discussion of fiduciary responsibilities, the administration of Hindu properties in Pakistan, etc we might actually LEARN something.

As in, I think any unifying force would have done, and it just so happened that Islam was the one.
So you agree that islam wasn't really required for those scientific advancements, and thus your post about the advancements in question was indeed a red herring?
You mean those technological and cultural advancements that were mostly adopted from the western classical tradition and China?
I'm not buying this. Consider arabic numbers and how different their whole concept was from the roman numbers which were then in use among the merchants in Europe.
edit:
Islamic civilization
oxymoron the more islamic the society becomes, the less civilized it turns into. This is because the very nature of islam is hostile to civilization and sustainable societies.

Uh, no. I think those advancements would not have occurred without some sort of civilization wide unifying force, and I think Islam just so happened to be that force, regardless of the merits or flaws of the religion itself.

They don't call it the "Hindu-Arabic numeral system" for nothing. It had even spread from India to the Near East well before the Islamic conquests.

quibble though - PML is NOT a fundie party IIUC - its the descendant of the original Muslim League which founded Pakistan, and is "Muslim" in the same sense that the Israeli Labour Party or the Likud is "Jewish" IE they advocated for a state for the muslims of the Raj, as for their safety and self determination. The Fundie party is the MMA. Now it would be MORE impressive if THEY were defending Hindu temples.

Of course. I'm not defending fanatics, nor am I saying that the party in power opposed to that (if it did, I'm sure the temple would still be standing).
I just wanted to point out that you can be Muslim and still oppose the destruction of a place of worship of other religions. This is not even worth saying to most Polytubbies, but it is aimed at the several anti-Muslim bigots we have in this forum, and who are bound to show up in this thread

The article says that the temple was "transferred" to the jeweller, not that it was leased to him.

It's a pity they demolished it. Places of religious worship make nifty bars or rock nightclubs.
I agree with this, if the place is unused for worship, and of no special cultural or architectural rarity and value.
Although I don't like religion, I often like the buildings, and certainly in the UK there are a ton of unwanted churches - many of them just closed for ever, it seems. They're a definite case for economic redevelopment.
I'd say that the last Hindu Temple in Lahore deserves preservation as a temple, though.
