Yeah well, Starship Troopers didn't seem to have an overbearing message either, and Verhoeven didn't seem too sure where he was going either, but I didn't see that movie getting 7 nominations.

Thin Red Line sucked too, which is all the more remarkable because it features quite a few actors that'd otherwise be worth watching. , but The Thin Red Line is a wonderful movie which was unfortunetly released the same year Saving Private Ryan was, which colored expectations of it... it wasn't perfect (hardly any movie is), but was a damned good flick asking the philosophical questions of war while the ugliness of war was going of underneath, comparing man's destruction to nature. Good stuff
