He'd be a moderate Democrat anywhere but in New England these days. Mitt might make a successful candidate in a national election, but moderates don't have a very good record of surviving the primaries these days.

McCain seems to me to be a man of integrity, who led the fight for campaign finance reform, despite fierce opposition from his own party, and who is still unforgiven by conservative pundits and bloggers for that. He is able to rise above partisanship and work with Democrats in the Senate, in ways many Republicans do not. He recognizes both the damage that "harsh interrogation techniques" have done to the US in the WOT, and the need to hold accountable those whose strategic mistakes led us to go into Iraq inadequately prepared for occupation.

He IS a conservative - not just on the WOT, but on issues from abortion to social spending (at least hed be inclined to cut spending BEFORE cutting taxes). I would not vote for him unless the Democrats nominated someone I found unacceptable. But I DO respect the man, and if I was put in the position of voting for him, I would do so with a sense that the republic was being put in good hands, even if not quite in the direction I wanted.

He is being lambasted now for three reasons - 1. Some folks in the media, who had gushed all over him for years, are just now waking up to the fact that he IS a conservative 2. Some liberals have decided that THE issue is Iraq, and have noted that McCain, while he criticizes how Rummy has run the war, and has called for Rummy to resign, has defended the decision to go to war and insisted on staying to victory. This group of liberals mainly is intent on stopping centrist Dems, esp Hilary - but how can they do that without attacking McCain? 3. While he directly took on the religiou right in 2000, hes been hinting lately at a modus vivendi. This is particularly troubling to some who want to ostracize the religious right. Me, Id be happy with someone who was simply less likely to buy off on their issues - and I think McCain is less likely than the current occupant of the WH.

It is amusing to the see the GOP base, or at least the pundits and bloggers, getting rile up against the strongest GOP candidates, and the Dem pundits and bloggers doing the same to the strongest Dem candidates. Hopefully at least one party will overcome its own extremists.

Here hoping the next set of candidates are effective and dynamic communicators. If one looks at the list of so called good and great presidents of the 20th century they all had that in common. And while I don't necessarily prescribe to the notion that the below list is actually endorsing the following presidents greatness it does represent a compilation of views held here at Poly. And the one thing all these had in common were that they were effective and emoting orators who could work the press.
