"Chavez Wants Vote on Governing Until '31"
CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez said Saturday that Venezuelan voters should have the chance to decide whether he should govern the country for the next 25 years.

Speaking at a stadium packed with supporters in central Lara state, Chavez said he would hold a referendum to put the question of his remaining in office to Venezuelans if the opposition pulls out of upcoming presidential elections.

"I am going to ask you, all the people, if you agree with Chavez being president until 2031," he said.

It was not clear if Chavez was talking about holding a legally binding vote to eliminate term limits or proposing a plebiscite.

Chavez said Friday that he said he might seek "indefinite" re-election through a referendum if the opposition boycotts the presidential vote.

"I would call a national referendum to have the people decide if I can continue here indefinitely or if I have to go after six years," he said.

Opposition leaders accuse Chavez, a former paratroop commander first elected in 1998, of becoming increasingly authoritarian and opening dangerous divisions along class lines in Venezuela — the world's fifth largest oil exporter.

The Venezuelan Constitution allows a president to be re-elected only once in immediate succession. Chavez is eligible for re-election to another six-year term in December, but if he wins he would not be able to run again in 2012.

Polls indicate Chavez is likely to win the Dec. 3 election, and international observers have signed off on recent votes as fair.

Four government opponents have announced plans to run against Chavez, although not all have agreed to participate in primaries to choose a single opposition candidate.

It's evil so I shouldn't laugh but I had a "discussion" with a llefty at DU about how I thought Chavez would alter the Venezuelan Constitution to make himself President for life. It looks like Chavez was exactly the ****bag most people thought he was and not the mystic savior the leftist extremists made him out to be.

I recall he already had the constitution changed once in order to extend his hold on power. Chavez even had the country gerrymandered and created tons of new districts so his party was assured a majority so he could alter the constitution to add a second term instead of just serving the one 5 year term the constitution was allowed. Completely the acts of a dictator and transparently obvious in his intent if the leftists would have bothered to take off their rose colored glasses.

I feel so vindicated over the last 5ive years of posting first luke-warm and then anti-Chavez threads on various websites.

he is obviously allowing the people of venezuela to grab the chance: they've found a great leader, they shouldnt loose the opportunity of being governed by him because of a silly thing like their constitution

on a more serious note, it sounds like he is extorting his opponents to participate in the coming elections and make his re-election legit...

I'm still on the fence about Chavez, it does seem he has popular support. Say what you will about his methods of generating said support, but is American politics really that different? (Well, the lots of money buying influence bit.) I'm not sure I like his policies that much though.

                            And either of this matters...?

An uncontested election should not mean, hey maybe this means I can forget about Constitutional limits. If no one ran against Bush in 2004, could he have started thinking about going for a 3rd term?!

And even if it was a plebiscite, it is still a scary and aggrandizing move. To use Bush again, if he held a non-binding referendum a few weeks after 9/11 asking if the American people would like him to stay on as President until 2030, would you say, oh no big deal? BULL****! You'd be screaming and carrying on how Bush was trying to become a dictator.

You can minimize it all you want, as said before, Chavez is showing what a ****bag he actually is and how much he doesn't care for the law.

In other words, this is a ploy to force the opposition to particpate in the election, not an attempt to become El Jefe for life.
