Please, che... stop the BS. If Bush did this if the Dems were protesting the 2004 election you'd be hopping mad. Admit it.

Just because he is a lefty doesn't mean you have to excuse him. Its what got Western commies in trouble with Stalin. Regardless of his atrocities, they excused him because he was a fellow lefty. Falling into that trap just makes you look like an idiot.

"The opposition is threatening to boycott elections. I know what I'll do! I'll threaten to become dictator until 2031 so they participate!"

Yeah, that doesn't raise any alarm bells... if you are on drugs that is.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

We've seen how much Bush cares about the law in the Florida affair... but of course two wrongs don't make a right.

Politics don't work the same in Venezuela as they do in a stable democracy... the opposition keeps pulling dirty tactics (pulling of would be another one of them, especially knowing that the last election has been judged fair by just about all credible sources), so Chavez answers with a threat that is to the measure of the opposition's tricks.

I'd be hopping mad at both the Dems and Bush, but in the case of Bush, I'd believe he was trying to set himself up for life.

Chavez isn't seeking to stay in for life. He's trying to force the opposition to particpate in an election he is very likely to win, given his continuing great popularity in the country. The opposition might decide to boycott, and then claim that because they boycotted the elections are illegitimate. It's their only shot at making that claim stick, since every election so far has been certified free and fair by international observers.

Exactly... and that's the worst case scenario. As pointed out in the article, he might also just want to remove the term limit. Perhaps he was being ambiguous about it just to scare his opponents.

Ah, since he's a lefty its quite alright to threaten dictatorship for over 25 years if the opposition decides to boycott the election...

And you wonder why people think you are a bunch of loons.

And here folks is what we call the Lefty Dance. Sit back and enjoy but don't forget your waders cause the BS gets real deep by the end of the show.

If the oppostion uses that as a way to set up another coup attempt or to try and call in the Americans or start a civil war, yes. You've seen the lengths to which the Venezeulean opposition has gone to thwart democracy.

What would you have Chavez do instead, force them to participate at gun point? He's giving them a choice, run against me or I might ask the people to elect me for life.

BTW, in case you've forgotten, at least one general in the U.S. government did say that if another terrorist attack occurred in the U.S., that we could kiss democracy good bye. Another said that Bush was appointed by God. We aren't so different.

And you think the opposition is going to boycott the election and then sit idle for 6 years until the next one? Everyone in his right mind knows that they're likely fomenting something.

                  Remember the 2002 coup?

yes it is already settled. You and che are talking about preventing things you say the opposition are planning and you both have already used the US is worse line. It sounds like the BS is about knee high already.

The 'US is the same line' is just icing on the cake... look at the posts, you'll see actual arguments too.

As for the opposition, use your voyant powers and tell us why they would pull out of an election. Suddenly they all want to take care of their grandchildren?

Unlike people with no debating skills, I can pass over the 'you're like Stalin' trolls... but others prefer to handpick the trolls and claim victory, ignoring the meat of the argument.

And futhermore, any leader that uses this a tactic should be denouced no matter how much you cream your pants when you see him because there should be no room for this kind of **** even as a political tactic. This goes for Bush, Chavez or any other leader in the world. That or those here should shut their damn mouth when they get the urge to lecture about how goverments should be democratic and for the people. They aren't democratic or for the people when they mention changing the rules to allow themselves to stay in longer than they are supposed to. Sure you can spin it any way you want and if it makes you feel better then go ahead, but don't talk here about for the people. It's sickning

Who knows what they are thinking but how is it constructive for Chavez to even mention this? Tell me how this is a good idea in any reality beyond Chavez wanting to get as much power for himself for as long as he can. I'm not a processional political pundut but damn man I an see someone getting things aligned the way he wants them. If you weren't so damned bullheaded you might see that to.
