Not sure what you're trying to get at but it reminds me of one seminar which had the former US ambassador to Germany John Kornblum as a guest. He mentioned how the 20th century was pretty successful for the US. One fellow student of me felt an urge to reply "But.. but the 20th century had the Vietnam war too, how can you make such a claim?!"
And this is in advanced studies... these people are sooo close to their degrees in political science
Welcome back Ned - it has been a little dull with only Asher making noise (that is in the periods he isn't banned )
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
IMO, this thread would be more entertaining if it were entitled:
Fez started both World Wars
Now THERE's a topic you can really sink your teeth into....

Don't you think it's a bit disingenuous to claim that Mao started WWII? Come on. Maybe he started the war in the far east, but the Germans started the war in Europe. Is there any evidence that what was started by Mao in east Asia helped spark things in Europe? I seriously doubt it.
We all know that Morrocco caused World War 1 (actually I'm only half joking).
And II. Without Morroccan troops, Franco would've been swiftly crushed, decreasing Hitler's agression and denying his generals the opportunity to experiment with the fancy new techniques with which they crushed the French.

When was Mao's attack on the Japanese in Peking? IIRC the war started with the Japanese drive from Manchuria towards Peking, not after they occupied it.

If I'm not wrong, only luftwaffe was present in spain, so the german panzer didn't have many chances to practise anything.

That post wasn't meant to be taken seriously... I made a few pretty huge exaggerations.
