WHAT is so bad about U.S. isolationism?
I used to think it might be desirable, but not any more.
Firstly, massive protectionism doesn't work. Apart from the fact that long-vanished manufacturing industries do not re-appear overnight, the result will be a vicious circle of ever-more inefficient companies demanding ever-more protection.
Secondly, under isolationism, the freakish rightwing ideologies that are currently dismantling America from within may become even more strident.
A bad economy and bad ideology means big trouble for the rest of the world. No thanks.

Who said those US isolationism caused those?Originally posted by Vesayen
Not a SINGLE ONE OF THOSE EVENTS happened *BECAUSE* we were isolationist. They all had seperate causes. There is absolutley no causal relation between our isolationist policies and those events.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

WTF difference does it make? We're bastards no matter what.

Isolationism? Isolationism is "just" to put yourselves separated of the outside world. No political aliances, no military aliances, leave ONU and other organizations, no day by day buying from outside or selling to outside (yes, oil and grain, too) put your currency in clearing, maybe forbid the internet.
To the rest of the World the States do not exist, to the States the outer World do not exist. If it is this you want, I heartly hope you never got the agreement from your fellow Americans.
Otherwise how could I buy my next games? And if I did, without Windows... right,I would save some money.
Best regards,

If 'isolationism' means non-interventionism then this would be a good thing IMV, and not just for the USA. I don't see this as the same as economic protectionism.
Interventionism reached its zenith with the attack on Iraq, and hopefully started its retreat with the withdrawal of Fukuyama from the 'neo-con' agenda.
In Europe, Tony Blair will always want to start wars against 'inferior' nations, and we'll have to take care of him ourselves over here, but I suspect the US citizens' appetite for their government trying to run all the countries in the world is lessening.

I would have never guessedOriginally posted by Vesayen
So… I admit I am not the MOST knowledgeable about this sort of thing,
so I’d love to hear your arguments-what would be so bad about the U.S. becoming isolationist?
well... it just isn't possible.
Not unless you want to give up pretty much all consumer goods.
The US doesn't have the ability to produce all of these goods domestically... at least, not at the cost of importing the goods from other countries. TV's, computers, clothing... very little of the things we buy are made in the US.
So while you may want to go hide your head in the sand, it just isn't a very practicle idea.
America's problems aren't caused by the rest of the world. We need to take responsibility for our problems and deal with them... not close our borders and stick our heads in the sand.To us, it is the BEAST.

Last time the US went isolationist, Hitler rose, Japan went beserk in China and we got this event that allowed cinematic gems such as Saving Private Ryan.
Exactly. The rest of the world can't control themselves if America isn't around to show them how to behave.KH FOR OWNER!
