WHAT is so bad about U.S. isolationism?

Every scholar and academic and politician and talk show host and political pundit looks down their nose and poo poos America becoming isolationist but none of them ever explain WHY.

I am prefacing this by saying I am flat out *NOT* concerned about security issues and confident we can protect ourselves . I am not afraid of “the terrorists”-if they were a real threat why haven’t they been going out in blazes of glory in our shopping malls with assault rifles? A ridiculously easy attack which would be massively effective…. why haven’t they poisoned our water supplies? Why haven’t they exploited any of the zillions of loopholes which would be easy to exploit in low-resource operations with a huge pay off? I’m not concerned about security, at all. I am roughly as concerned about terrorists as I would have been concerned about then 9 or 10 years ago, my only real security concerns are nations like China….. which are going to crush us economically.

WHY would isolationism be a bad idea?

The U.S. should pull out of all trade treaties which are not beneficial to the U.S. and begin massive tariffs to try to bring industry back to the U.S.

How can we NOT be doomed when we have no manufacturing in this country? A “service” economy is thin as paper and only works if everyone decides to play right. Having our economy based on intellectual property is suicide-because it depends on others respecting them. An economy based on manufacturing does not depend on the respect of foreigners for our intellectual property rights.

So… I admit I am not the MOST knowledgeable about this sort of thing, so I’d love to hear your arguments-what would be so bad about the U.S. becoming isolationist?

Going into brief isolationism and starting all over is exactly what we need to do. Keep relations with England and Israel, and regroup on others.

Last time the US went isolationist, Hitler rose, Japan went beserk in China and we got this event that allowed cinematic gems such as Saving Private Ryan.

        Won't work. Simple as that.

IF we pulled back as you describe, then sooner or later (probably sooner....probably much, much sooner), something would crop up around the world that needed to be dealt with.

If nobody stepped up to the plate (and it's exceedingly likely that nobody would), then a nation, or a group of nations would come to us and dangle some sort of incentive to get involved. Cash. Trade deal. Something.

At which point, it'd be in our interest.

        Which would involve us.

And besides that, we'd still be involved (ie NOT isolationist) because there are a number of arrangements with other countries that are very much in our best interest to maintain.

It's a small world...why would we want to?

Yeah but we didn't have ICBM's then.

What we need to do is hurry up and build our space ship so we win the game!

But look, Vel. USA gets involved, the world curses us. Stay out of it, the world draws us into events, and curses us.

WTF difference does it make? We're bastards no matter what.

Its all about our own self interest. The cost of being named bastards is a pittance in comparison to being able to affect world events to our liking.

Not a SINGLE ONE OF THOSE EVENTS happened *BECAUSE* we were isolationist. They all had seperate causes. There is absolutley no causal relation between our isolationist policies and those events.

Because this small world is turning our economy into a soft target which is going to be destroyed by China fairly soon and fairly quickly.

What sort of thing could crop up? Example? I want an example or your saying "Something magical could happen yes er..... magic, yeah!"

Considering we can no longer economically support a manufacturing base... (costs are too high) and the fact that we need far to many resources that we don't have...

Not a chance in hell of this happening

China is going to destroy the US economy? Really?

That's....one of the more colorful theories I've ever heard.

Trust me, as one of the few industrialized, developed nations that actually still has a positive growth rate, the US is in no danger of being ransomed, destroyed economically, or overrun.

I'm not sure I can follow where you're trying to lead us.

It is in the interest of the US to prevent other powers from rising to hegemony. Trust me, you will becoem cocnerned for security issues shortly after isolationism. As Vel says.

Which brings us to the very reason we're screwed. I've said it many times, a service nation doesn't remain a powerful nation.
If we're going to be a nation of roofers and lawn maintenance..wait a second. American's don't even produce good lawns or roof work.
                            OMG. We are screwed.

                              Nahhh.

Even if the very WORST happened, we'd still not be screwed.

We're too big a nation, with too many people and too many resources to simply be rolled over.

It's not like Belize or something.

Even if the economy came apart at the seams tomorrow, we'd survive it.

We could rebuild it (granted, we'd no longer be the biggest or strongest, but that's a separate debate).
