All the people with whom I studied political science used to be excellent in class in highschool (politcal science is a selective course in France).

Among the other polsci students, I don't remember any person who was forced to take the "liberal arts" direction. However, pretty much all of my fellow students enjoyed econ/literature over math/natural sciences (if not they'd have taken a math/natural sciences direction)

The people I study with are affiliated with world leading companies (as of now I am too), and future visionaries of high tech that gives freedom to people in their daily activities and helps the world be more equal.

Your friends are nothing but pot smoking 'social thinkers' who will amount to nothing. Granted, one of them might make it and create something, a model of things, make a real impact that would be larger than one of my friends will be able to do. But I doubt it.

You people will die poor, lonely and most of all, lived a wasted life.

My friends are already making a change by working on legislations about education, transportation etc. or by implementing them.

These are concrete changes in the daily life of every citizen in their jurisdiction.

        Thank you, try again

Ok I give you that much, that these are important issues.

HOWEVER if they are suggesting and implementing things you have proposed today, they are not doing a service, but rather destroying Europe.

Maybe tomorrow you will snap out of what ever it is that bothers you today, yes? Let's make a deal, tomorrow you wake up as a sensible person.

I have nothing against the science majors, was one myself, and wanted to be one for the longest while.

However, I switched over to arts in my second year, against the wishes of my advisor. He thought I should stay in physics and astronomy, and that once I got over this hurdle I'd have smooth sailing.

Am I happier? Sure. Will l make as much money? I don't know. Will I be able to make a decent living? Yes. And to me that's all that matters.

Well since we can't argue about the original point of this whole thread, because all librul losers took offense, then we have to go by what they give us. Which is what can be expected, useless garbage.

While this discussion took place, tens of thousands died from hunger, diseases we have destroyed in the western countries that are unnecessary deaths. During this librul onslaught for principles such as the importance of subjective thought, no matter what it is and how far out your reality is from the truth, even if there are no absolute truths, lots of people died because they didn't have the tools or the knowledge how to survive in that particular situation. Even more people died because they couldn't get help, because of insufficient communicating tools.

But go ahead, put your fist under your jaw and think really hard, drink some red wine, read few manifestos, agree with them and don't think about reality or the hardships REAL people have to endure and then maybe you can put some value to your OWN thinking that never helped anyone. GO ahead.

My group is making a difference. We help the world, providing better communication tools, spreading information faster than ever, helping the tools to be obtainable for everoyne so that the free information becomes a powerful tool for the poor and everyone else too, to see what's out there, to gain more possibilites to help yourself and your fellows. This is what we do. You can continue thinking in your parents' basement.

                    • This debate became pretty stupid and point less...
Social science, art etc... do not receive so much money.

And any educated person will have a higher earning, will vote more often, will be able to think more clearly, will be more critical about issue, will participate with more intelligence to public debate, and will have a better way to understanding the point of other.

But if I look at this thread... I think the last argument is untrue.

I was just reading the review of book that Asher proposed in another thread: Decoding the universe by Charles Seife.
Information theory was preposed first by "philosophers" and linguist. And i first approached this theory by a philosophy books, and another from mathematician, philosophers and computer engineer. When put together, liberal science can be truely productive.

The only problem between liberal science vs down to earth science is that these two general field, became too much divided. I'm pretty sure if philosophers get some course from other discipline, and vice versa, we will have more innovation. And surely, more widsom.

Considering that we already have the scientific knowledge, the technical know-how, and sufficent resources to eradicate these diseases across the world (and not only in the west), this is where politics kick in. The political-economic situation prevents adequate medicine and personnel to be present where needed, and this situation can only be dealt with through politics.

                          • I never said we don't need librul art majors, because we do. And I'm not putting a value on them, as we can't figure out which one is more important, furthermore it's not feasible comparison if you're looking for results.

But as this was about something else, the actual hard number crunching data of ROI I believe, on average an individual real scientist will have more of an impact in his career than librul. However, there might be one or two libruls, that make an impact worth of 400 scientists. But when we talk about the average, libruls are waste of money in that sense, more than scientists, when we talk about productivity in terms of society and what it gets back from th esupport.

If we would weigh in both schools as in which one as a whole makes more, that's impossible to say. On individual level, easy.

I have not argued against anything else, but these offended obsolete-degree people are attacking us because we're too awesome.

Exactly! And you can't do it! WE PROVIDED YOU THE TOOLS AND THE ANSWER! What do you do? Grab more power to yourselves and feast on your loot while others suffer.

NO NO NO. IT seems like we have to do more since you can't or won't. We have to make tools that are SO cheap for the end user, simple to use and powerful, that we can make the world more equal because you just care about yourselves.
