Because compared to other Western countries, we still have an irrational, sectarian hangup about sex and sexuality.

      So?

That's an effect of our Christian heritage, not Christianity itself.

I'm not "pulling" shit from anywhere. I'm responding to this section of the OP:

Society shuts down for five days.

Perhaps he's wildly exaggerating and thinks that a 12:00am bar closing time on Saturday night is a sign of "society shutting down for five days". Regardless, I don't know exactly what happens in Gangerolf-land, but nobody here in America would even think to describe Easter as the time that "society shuts down for five days." Hence the statement/question.

Society does indeed "shut down" during Easter in Scandinavia. Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday are all official holidays here.

As for Monday, "2nd day of Easter", Christ appeared before the disciples on that day (they had found the tomb empty the day before), and declared that he was the ruler of all things heavenly and earthly.

Someone mentioned "unions negotiating extra holidays a long time ago". That sounds like an urban legend. At least it's not accurate for the way it has evolved here. Those "extra" days at Easter, Pentecost and Christmas are an integral part of Christian tradition here.

And about the Christmas tree being an ancient tradition, it's not actually. Not the way it's practiced by placing the tree inside and decorating it. That custom arose in Germany in the mid-19th century and spread from there.

Well, the other Western countries that have stronger equal rights for its citizens have a history of Chirstian heritage. There is something that has caused United States to lag behind some other Western countries in the principle of equal rights.

also, just because you are flamboyant and godless does not mean this country has a sexual hangup. try to see the benefit in not legalizing polygamy and homosexual marriage.

This would be less of a crap troll if MrFun weren't on record opposing polygamy in a currently active thread. As it is, you get a 2 for lack of effort.

he claimed that women in such relationships were abused/maltreated .... I doubt he knows anyone in such a relationship ... nor does his assertion have any factual basis

First of all, gay COMMUNITY churches, as a norm, are not exclusively for gays and lesbians -- they welcome straight people who are supportive (friends and family of gays and lesbians). Wanted to make sure that an idiot like you at least understands that.

                                Secondly, I am not flamboyant.

And third, after reading my post about my attending a local church, I fail to see how you can claim I do not believe in God.
