What cracks me up, is that illegal immigration is largely a market-driven force. There's a demand for more labor in the farming and service sectors, so people come to fill it.

Aren't we conservatives supposed to be against government regulation and for market selfcorrections?

    Just wondering ...

You economic conservatives are. Unfortunately, you rose to power by making common cause with isolationists and xenophobes. This is why the GOP is imploding over this issue...

Dear President Bush and all you *******s in congress:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

            1. Free medical care for my entire family.

            2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

            3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

            4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

            5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

            6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

            7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

            8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.

            9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any effort to learn local traffic laws.

            10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.

            11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

            12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

            13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

            Sincerely,

            Paul Revere

Cinco de Mayo is a great holiday. I got a day off for it while teaching China. During the year, we were allowed one day off for a holiday. And it has to be a holiday. Most people took Christmas off, but I decided to save my for the Labor Holiday. During this national holiday we would get a whole week off in May. Sounds goods? There's a catch, you have to make up your missed Thur. and Fri. on a weekend. Since, I didn't have classes on Fri, I didn't have to make it up. But I would have to make up the Thur. classes on a Sat. So I used my holiday for Cinco de Mayo.

Actually, this is a potentially interesting replay of the 60s. The Dems built a coalition of progressives on the one hand and xenophobes (racists) on the other; it worked until civil rights became a front-burner issue, then it imploded. Now the GOP has built a coalition of free-marketers and xenophobes; it worked until immigration became a front-burner issue, and is now threatening to implode.

Clearly, the solution is the creation of Xenophobe Party, or XP.

                            wtf

I'm a conservative, but not an ******* or bigot.
Kaak wants Mexicans to obey laws

                            OMFG TEH BIGOT RACISM!!

It's amazing how brainwashed and intolerant you've become because of political correctness. Everyone who disagrees is now a bigot.

The couple that lives beside me are legal immigrants, but when I tried talking to them in English I didn't get very far. My high school Spanish worked a lot better. And this is in ****ing Maryland.

12 weeks of English language classes aren't going to accomplish very much. Otherwise half of the people in the US would speak fluent French.

But you're right; they shouldn't be able to read important government announcements..
Uh, no. Why on earth should goverment, id est Kaak's tax dollars, go to fund education of the immigrants who have been too lazy to learn English on their own before immigrating? That's the whole point, they shouldn't. There shouldn't be 12-week language classes since there shouldn't be any classes at all. Go to a library; learn the language, laws and customs of your destination country before you move over there. That's the key.

There's a demand for more labor in the farming and service sectors, so people come to fill it.
That's why unemployement is 0%, right? Everyone who's able to work and wants to work gets a job, right? You're correct, it is a market mechanism: There's a demand for illegal, undocumented workers since they can be paid less than the minimum wage, employers don't have to protect them in dangerous job fields and they don't have to pay taxes.

Oh, and the only person who has been throwing racially motivated comments in this thread is Ted.

See, this is where you get a big f*ck you. My grandparents, who knew nothing but the odd word in English, communicated in their native Ukranian until the day they died -- at which point they'd been in the US about 60 years or so each. My grandfather was gainfully employed (as a baker) the whole time up to retirement. His children, while not college educated, all held down middle class jobs, and the ones who married raised middle-class families. Their children, all college educated, include a stockbroker, a business executive, an urban planner, and yours truly, a professor-turned-diplomat.

Yup, grandma and grandpa sure were lazy. And their progeny sure did ruin America. If only they had learned English!

Last time I checked, the United States has no official language. Why is it any worse to teach people in Spanish than it is in English, seeing that they appear to be legal equals?
