According to the first exit polls, Prodi's coalitions seems to be in the lead. Its victory is not fully clear however. Also, it is possible that the senate has another majority than the house, which would mean that no law could pass.

Yup, so far Prodi has a 5% advantage. But, as Spiffor said, the Senate will probably belong to the centre-right, as Berlusconi has a huge advantage in most regions of the north.
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

I thought it was the south which was more prone to vote Berlusconi?

          Not at all.

Generally speaking, the industrial districts vote for Berlusconi, the less wealthy regions vote for Prodi

Berlusconi has the leadership at the Senate. For the Parliament, Prodi has a 5% lead

This guy's no fun at all. Looks like European relations will be a lot less entertaining.

But let's wait and see. It's being reported as a neck-to-neck race here.

Winston, yes, there were some mistakes during the trasmission of data from the voting sites to the Nexus Center, and from the Nexus Center to the Government offices. And Exit Polls were completely wrong. Prodi was reported as triumphant (7-10 points of advantage) while right now it's actually Berlusconi leading the overall. Very confused situation. Amazing to think that three months ago Prodi was leading by 18 points.

                  It looks like Berlusconi won.

So once again, it's all about how you count those votes.

It appears Lazio will be crucial for the Senate seats given to Mr.B.

Though that's not where the parliamentary basis for the new government is at, it does remind me of our 1998 general election, where the determining 179th and final seat of the new parliament balanced on, IIRC 73 votes in a village somewhere in the Faroe Islands.

But it went the wrong way. *cries* And we had to wait another 3½ years before we could finally replace Rasmussen with Rasmussen.

Berlusconi called our PM the most handsome in Europe and said he was glad he didn't bring his wife to the Copenhagen summit.

Based on that remark alone, I hope he stays on.

                              Rasmussen! Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

You could also check out the thread I made on this very topic. It is now in the OT Archive: Best looking PM in Europe?. Though the Spanish managed to corner the poll.

                                So, final results.

                                Senate

                                CDL 50.2%
                                Unione 48.95%

                                Parliament
                                CDL 49.73%
                                Unione 49.80%

Unione won by 23,000 votes (overall) and claimed victory. I am very worried as the Constitution says that in order to win an election the 50% plus one vote is required in both Senate and Parliament.

I really want to know what's the point of view of those calling Berlusconi a dictator, as I have strange feelings about claiming victory in such a way.
