How can you say bluray has backing from "all major hollywood studios" when one of the largest, Universal, doesn't support bluray?

And analysts are full of it, some of them have predicted 60% Xbox 360 marketshare and others 10%. They pull things out of their ass depending on where their parent company's stocks are located.

There is an HD-DVD player on the market, Toshiba launched it on March 31st. It is Samsung that will launch the first Bluray player is slated for June 25th.

So you mean that 4 of the major six aren't backing ANYONE, when you said they were backing Blu-ray (Disney is doing both). M-G-M is a part of Sony, btw.

Looks like, though, as Asher says, Universal isn't supporting Blu-ray at all.

This is the third time I've told you this: Universal is HD-DVD exclusive. Just the other day a Universal exec called bluray a "flop".

Also, Disney's CEO just said they will "probably publish in both formats."

Not backing anyone equals to backing everyone oppurtunistically.

170 firms are among the Blu Ray Assosiation partners. Its Board of Directors consists of Apple Computer Corp.; Dell, Inc.; Hewlett Packard Company; Hitachi, Ltd.; LG Electronics Inc.; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; Panasonic (Matsu****a Electric); Pioneer Corporation; Royal Philips Electronics; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; Sharp Corporation; Sony Corporation; TDK Corporation; Thomson; Twentieth Century Fox; Walt Disney Pictures and Television; Warner Bros. Entertainment.

can you get a more impressive list than that?

Err...you just listed members of the Bluray Association. So what?

Many of those companies also support HD-DVD, and there are also HD-DVD exclusives.

For what it's worth, your list is out of date...HP defected from Bluray only to both, and their CEO has hinted at HD-DVD only. Microsoft and Intel are now also HD-DVD only.

LG's bluray player was cancelled and is being replaced by a hybrid Bluray/HD-DVD player.

Let's not forget the untouchables: Bluray cannot use the term DVD, or any variation of the DVD logo. The DVD Consortium selected HD-DVD as the official successor to DVD, and thus its name contains DVD and its logo is a variation of the DVD logo.

Don't underestimate the power of brand familiarity. Sony themselves rely on it with the Playstation.

Will the HD-DVd camp have a singly player that will sell approx. 30-50 million units in the next 5 years? No.

They are going to spend billions in useless brand building when Sony has it all for free...HD DVD may live a couple of yeras before completely dying out but Blu Ray will have at least a decade of secured steady supply and demand as the format of PS3.

Hmm... insulting Universal when the only thing they've done is declare themselves for HD-DVD... nope, no bias there!

                            Neither does Bluray.

You also need to understand the explosive popularity of MediaCentre PCs. Microsoft supports HD-DVD, and that's precisely why HP switched camps.

                            What?

HD-DVD has the DVD name, logo, and branding power and familiarity. Bluray is the technology from left field and reminds most people of BETA...

Which will really look silly as HD-DVD wins out because of brand name and cheaper price. PS3 will have an obsolete drive in its system!

And what billions in brand building? Everyone knows the term DVD (and HD for that matter).
