Great thing you don't run a business. You don't even know the power of a brand name!

You don't understand brand power...that's the only reason Playstation 2 is still around. It was completely outclassed in every way by its competition, but people want a "Playstation"

...just like people go buy and rent "DVDs".

So its PS3 and Blu Ray against HD-DVD. You honestly think that the infant HD DVD plus a vague "DVD" from the old are somerthing to challenge Blu Ray, Sony,Pioneer,Samsung,Dell, and PS3? I dopnt think so, but we can have a bet on it id tyou like

Samsung and LG have both changed from Bluray only to supporting both in hybrid players.

It's really Sony and Pioneer vs. Toshiba and Microsoft. And seeing as how MediaCentre PCs outsell standalone DVD units -- which are on a decline in sales, FYI -- I'd put more emphasis on the newer technologies like MediaCentre PCs over standalone DVD players, which are on the way out.

The PS3 won't be a big deal given its high price, and seeing as how bluray players are significantly more expensive than HD-DVD players as well -- and consumers won't even notice a difference -- I think you are missing out some of the most important considerations.

Sony has even said they're going to keep using MPEG2 on their movies...which is retarded. It's the same "bloaty movies" as on DVD you just blasted.

If you underestimate the power of a brand name, you will only get bit on the ass. And besides, the biggest PC seller is not Dell, it's HP, who is on the HD-DVD wagon. For a Pioneer or Samsung, HD-DVD has Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo. The sides are fairly even in pull. HD-DVD, though, will have a much more familiar brand name and far cheaper price, and even though Blu-ray will be able to hold more and be included on the PS3, it is at a disadvantage due to those factors.

Uh, yeah I forgot you are the expert in brand theory...*sigh* The thing is that a generic "DVD" brand is very very weak. Where Sony, Pioneer, Dell, LG , Samsung, and PlayStation are very distinguished and exclusive brandnames woth gazillion more than a "DVD" ending in some sloppy format. it like saying the DVD couldnt have won because the CD was so powerful brand name.

HD-DVD also has the economies of scales and existing infrastruture to fall back on.

Bluray is requiring disk manufacturers to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to replace all of the manufacturing lines with ones capable of manufacturing Bluray discs...something most of them are balking at.

MediaCentre? I'm sorry that brings some flashbacks from 1996 to my mind. Is it like the Tablet PC wich was supposed to be used byt 90% of cunsumers by now?

Oh come on. When you buy a TV, do you say "I'm going to go buy a Sony" or do you say "I'm going to go buy a TV"?

DVDs are synonymous with video discs, period. That's huge in formats.

You still don't get the power of a brandname. DVD is going to be recognized by people who have DVD players now. People will go for the thing with DVD in it because they'll think it'll be the only one that can handle their current DVDs, while Blu-ray won't.

And I don't recall a HD-CD competing with DVD (which weren't even used for videos... better comparison would have been VCRs, but even then, DVD did not have to compete with HD-VCR or something).

                              You are clearly very clued-in.

U.S consumers bought more Windows Media Center-equipped PCs than the standard edition of Windows XP last month, and sales of Media Center will reach 10 million by the end of March, a Microsoft executive said Tuesday.

And the expensive price of Bluray movies compared to HD-DVD movies, and the expensive price of Bluray hardware compared to HD-DVD hardware, will determine that battle.

PS: How many people really watch DVDs on their PS2?

The PS2's DVD player sucks and lacks features, just like the Bluray player in PS3 will suck. Why would Sony cannibalize sales from their $1500US Bluray player by giving you adequate features on your PS3?

By the way, we should note that the new Sony portable movie format, UMD, has bombed.
