Most people don't have exposure to iTunes, and they can use iTunes without iPods.

Common sense/intelligence leads us to believe the reason they buy iPod is for the
    (1) trendyness
    (2) brand
    (3) design

Not for the bundled software that you can download without the ipod.

Yeah so the reasons to buy multitask PS3 with Blu ray are 100:1 against buying a useless single use HD-DVD player....

Or the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive and the obvious bundled version that I'm sure is to come.

Or a MediaCentre PC...which is what most people are doing.

Jesus jumping Christ do you realise the sheer comedy value of you justifying the decision to buy an Ipod

Face it, its all the 3 reasons you mentioned above and the iPods amazing marriage to the iTunes music store. This overall service is what drives people to buy iPods.

M$ has a really good combination with the 360, if they could produce enough of them.

There is plenty of room in this business for three console makers, but some of the prices quoted for the PS3 will, if true, guarantee a low rate of sales.

I also agree with Asher that few people buy HDTVs in Europe. On the other hand, HDTVs are still only in ~ 20% of US households. The TVs are flying off the shelves, but it just takes a long, long time for everybody to make the switch.

DanS thats actually the most interesting thing here. The 3 may actually co-exist and found their own markets while none of them is able to achieve global domination.

It's a prediction of mine that is reasonable.

If the bluray in PS3 is, in fact, a major boon for PS3 sales, MS could easily counter that by bundling their previously-announced HD-DVD accessory and pricematching it with the PS3, if not undercutting the PS3's price.

Honestly, I see the harddrive moving down to the "core" unit, and the "Premium" unit will get the HD-DVD drive included instead. It makes sense.

MS and Sony are aiming for the same markets. Nintendo is the one aiming low.

Sony's even copying MS' buzzwords recently, they were talking about how the PS3 will make games "Live"...

The thing about the PS3 is the price. Sony risks pricing itself out of viability.

But maybe they'll come in at $399/$499. Who knows?

                        I'm predicting $499 state-side.

And currently, the 360 is at $399/$499?

In any case not all Xbox360 owners will have a HD-DVD so that pretty much invalidates tour argument. MS can sure throw money arouind but they wont be able to hold down the Blu Ray. It reminds me of Sega trying to check-mate with the CD32 in 1990ties..

Well see whos estimate was more accordng to the facts...well see

It's possible that Sony could win the Blu-Ray fight, but lose the PS3 fight.
