No, just the ones that would actually use it...

In the end there's no real difference.

That's a pretty large difference from a $499 assumed PS3 price. If M$ can execute its plan and fulfill demand this Christmas season, Sony will be fighting an uphill battle for dominance. But again, the PS3 could still do very good business.

          What?

MS has way more resources and way more cash and way more profit to dip into than Sony.

Sony's financial situation is murky and Stringer is a very conservative CEO that doesn't like losses, period. He's the one who laid off people for the first time in Sony's history...

In the end theres a huge difference, peripherals make a big huge difference. Why didnt the Zapper become a household item even if a large number od NES owners were duck hunting with it? It was a peripehra...nevertherless it wasent essential for the NEs experience...

If M$ really wanted to get aggressive, they should drop the price $75 for this Christmas season.

I understand what you're saying for gaming peripherals, it just doesn't apply here.

It is far cheaper for existing Xbox 360 owners to buy the HD-DVD addon than it would be to buy a whole new player (the addon can leverage the 360's decoding/computational/interface abilities).

If people want to watch high-definition DVDs, the cheaper route would not be to buy a PS3 or dedicated players, but the addon for the 360 (and subsequent bundling with the 360, depending how hard MS wants to screw Sony).

                  What they should do...

is bundle the HD-DVD addon and a 100GB drive with the Premium.

And add the 20GB HD to the core.

Forget an HD-DVD for this year. Who gives a **** about HD-DVD in relation to the 360? We'll all be buying our HD-DVDs as separates and M$ shouldn't get distracted by it.

It's to battle the checkbox on the PS3. But you're right actually, maybe next holiday season.

There won't be enough PS3s to be competitive anyway.

MS, and mark my words, will not be willing ot gamble as much as Sony on the console markets, its a Core industry for Sony and thus a vital one. To achieve victory they will have to be albe and willing to sacrifice and gamble a reasonable share of their globals assets as well ast the assests of their respected affiliates. MS may seem to have a lot of cash but do not under estimate the means and resources of Japanese multinational corporartions. Stringer is only working on a provisional gaijin basis. if he makes one mistake hes out, jus ask drake or anyone familiar with the japsnaese state of mind....PS3 has to succeed, and he will gambke it all, trust me on this...MS and Sony will both suffer but Sony will prevail alas it may be a Pyrrhic victory the next rounf is on 2010 and and the power balance will have changed. Maybe there will be a chinese console by then...

                        • I was originally thinking that I would get a PS3 instead of a XBox360 (I figured XBox360 would have a Tech edge, while PS3 would have a game edge), now I am thinking that I will probably get an XBox360 instead...

the XBox360 being cheaper (likely), tech better in the ways that matter, and at out a year longer, having better games...

It pretty much boils down ot this. How much is MS willing to gamble for HD DVD, otherwise its doomed.

I mark your words, and discard them with the rest of the trash you've spewed tonight.

MS has the ability and the pedigree to gamble way more than Sony will. As you said, Playstation is their bread and butter these days -- not something you'll gamble with. MS has way more money to invest and huge profit margins to play off of, and Sony is teetering on the edge of profitability.

For MS it's a strategic move more than a business move -- especially with Sony saying Linux will be on the PS3's harddrive. That's a huge threat to Windows, MS' bread and butter...

That is why they don't bat an eye sinking billions of dollars in losses into Xbox, and that is why Sony is in a bad place trying to push an expensive new standard against a company with deeper pockets and less to lose.
