I don't know how severe of a personal problem Kid had with that particular employee, but I would think that unless there was a truly serious personal clash between him and that cashier, he should have kept the employee.

Even in "at will" states, I was under the impression that you had to have some sort of reason for firing an employee, in case the employee chose to bring suit.
The only legal restrictions I'm aware of in "at will" states are gender/race discrimination.

Now, you can file for unemployment regardless, but the company can't get in trouble for firing you or even be forced to reinstate you - they can just be held liable for unemployment wages.

She just thought she could do anything she wanted to do. Actually she had been there for a long time, much longer than I had been the manager. She was the most productive cashier but she just wouldn't do what I told her to do. That doesn't work, and she had to be fired. She actually said some really inappropriate things to me which triggered the firing, but she really had to do anyway.

Well duh! How can any reasonable person disagree with your firing her then? With what you have said here, I completely agree with your reason for firing her, because it was clearly job-related -- she was not listening to her boss (you).

People have to get fired sometime bud. No system is going to work unless you can make necessary changes.

I agree that people occasionally have to get fired. When they are a real liability to their company, or when there are grave economic woes.

Firing someone because she *****es at job, despite being an excellent employee, is something that I expect from somebody who has no respect for human people. Not from a commies.

I don't know what you consider a 'real' liability or a 'grave' concern, but I think that they should be fired if they are a liability at all.

It's not just that she *****es. I said that I enjoyed firing her because she was a *****, but that's not why. She was the most productive employee (in the strict sense of using the cash register), that doesn't mean that she was the best employee. I have respect for everyone, even if they are a *****. I don't wish her ill will, but I'm happy that I don't have to work with her anymore.

Spiffor -- Kid said that that particular employee was productive as a cashier, but she refused to listen to her boss (Kid).

You can't seriously think that employees should be retained even when they blantantly disregard their bosses.

Morale is as important a function of any organization as productivity or efficiency. Too many people think that the only function of their job is to do the specific task on hand - the good manager weeds out those people or places them in slots where they won't poison the rest of the organization.
