While I agree with you that the UvT mentality is detrimental in the long run, in the short run, the oppressed recognizing their common interests and the interests of an opposition group can be exceedingly useful. I'm not sure yet, whether society has reached the point where such clannishness is more of a detriment than a boon for the oppressed.

You have to look at beyond the immediate repricussions. It's not a fair assessment.

The way I see it, UvT (for short) had its use when there actually was active war between the races. When there were Klansmen lynching and burning black churches all the time, and rarely did anyone lift a finger to stop them, then there was some use for racial solidarity.

Now, however, the KKK is basically impotent, and the oppression blacks face is of a much more subtle variety. Discrimination in employment, the encouragement of delinquency in their children, economic and political exploitation. Emphasizing their differences from the rest of humanity can only make it easier to justify the exploitation. It's a psychological battle know, and it's harder to feel compassion for people who huddle together in small groups and glare at you. Human, not racial, solidarity is what is needed.

Well, blacks haven't pooled their resources together as much as more successfull minority groups. I think blacks would do a lot better as a group if they stuck together more.

How have otehr minority gorups pooled their resources together? I think Chinatown might be an example of of the solidarity you're considering, but it's a little late for Something like 'Africatown'.

It's not entirely true that whites aren't discriminated against and prejudiced in America. However, when compared to the that of blacks, well, there's very little to compare. This is why black oppression is far more serious than white oppression in the US.

Right. Is that racism? That implies, that whites as a race have some kind of special gene or inbuilt ability to oppress others and other races don't have this at all. Nothing short of extreme stupidity.

Whites oppress other whites. Whites oppress all walks of life, this is true. But that others aren't doing it? That's crap. And also in countries that the whites predominantly are in position of power, and oppressive towards other minorities, well, does that mean that if other races were in power, they would never oppress whites if they were the minority? NO! Does it mean they would for sure? No.

It feels really goo to finally be able to tlak about this with level headed people.

Last time I was out working for the Northwest Youth Corps. A kid quit so we got a replacement so we could adequately tear up trail as a forestry crew. The kid was from Portland's ghetto (I don't know what its like in Portland). He was a blood but not the serious thuggin and buggin type. Just more like he was born into it and stayed along to survive.

So one night in the guys tent somehow the issue of the n word came up. Things were never the same, and we still had 2 weeks stuck in the woods in cramped conditions working and living together 24/7. It really teaches you patience.

I personally think that Affirmative Action is something we should do away with. I think Black People are at a point where they can stand on their own. That would also hopefully help to phase out the racial tensions in this country.

I still support something like the Negro College fund which helps the good minds of the ghetto rise to achieve their full potential. But affirmative action, from what I've heard, really screws up the system.

My cousin in Cali was talking about how they give preference to the kids with the best grades, but from a lot of inner city schools that means that you end up with total dunces at colege who don't really belong there.
