    MVP without a DOUBT.

Cheechoo got two more goals. THE CHEECHOO TRAIN.

      • I know he's never gonna win it, but I think Lidstrom deserves at least a mention in MVP discussions.

But on the same night Kipper stole yet another a 1-0 game from Colorado.

          MVP.

Not a chance -- there's way too many valuable players on Detroit for him to be considered MVP.

MVPs are players that make the team work -- without them, they're ****.

The only 3 candidates are Kipper, Thorton, and Jagr.

Jagr will likely win but he's the least deserving of the 3.

I just don't know how long anyone can stay in that headspace to be that good game in, game out forever.

Sooner or later his focus is going to move. Life. Kids. Fast women. Whatever, but he is not going to reproduce the last season and a half for an entire career. That I'll lay odds on.
And at "that" point there will still be 6 or 7 other goalies in the NHL who would be able to take a team with the Flames current system to the playoffs. Sutter's going to be a near life-long GM with Calgary, and with our ability on the cap - you'd be sure that he's going to put priority on a capable goalie

There's no point trying to belittle our team by means of fear mongering Mika's possible demise. One of two things will happen before that:

1 - Calgary will gain a new head coach whose style fits less with the grind and more with the run and gun (only a negative if it's executed unsuccessfully). This is the most likely possibility if we win the Cup this season, and that's going to be the testing ground for Kipper's shut out dominance.

2 - Calgary Flames owners (via Sutter) will drop back on the roster spending, foregoing re-sign of Iginla and other greats to see a better profit intake. Not every owner of this team sees running an NHL outfit simply as a hobby, and income does eventually matter.

              [...]

With the outstanding Calgary fan base resulting from the 03/04 cup run, in combination with the P.N.W. fruit we've just achieved - this hockey club could sit on its ass and spend 2/3s of what it is right now on talent - and still turn an unbelievable revenue for the next half decade.

The owners know this, the market analysts know this, and there's long term foresight being put into play to secure as much of the economic opportunity as is available (ie. talk of demolishing/replacing the Saddledome with something bigger). Again, if Calgary wins the cup this season - there will likely be two more seasons of near cap spending salary at the MOST. From there, the franchise can coast a half decade at a time on linger of its' previous success, before a philosophy of re-building and re-winning is even needed.

Kipper won't be the fall of the Flames. He'll be a New York Ranger (etc.) before that

Yeah Jagr will most likely win. There could be a Steve Nash style upset touting either Kipper or Thornton instead, though it seems too unlikely that the player who most represents what the NHL is trying to become will be ignored.

Policy decision = Jagr for MVP

                • Isn't the MVP decided by vote, by journalists, former players, and such?

                    • So then how can a player be voted on based on policy?

                      • Because the league and the described voters are inseparable on the whole. Both in network, and (more relevantly) by cultural association.

Hockey veterans - and particularly the Press (seen as reflective extension of popular opinion), defined what the NHL needed to become after the lock-out. The NHL responded with its current structural policy; and that policy now reigns as popular step "forward"

Jagr will almost undoubtedly take MVP. Not because he's the most valuable player in the league - but because the voters want to endorse HIS game as the "new NHL".

Thornton rather deserves the prize, and the possibility of Kippersoff for MVP is close to zero. Especially with the threat the Calgary Flames style brings to the new NHL's design.

                        • I hate myself. I had the chance to buy Habs playoff tickets at presale, and passed it up cuz i thought i couldnt go to them all. Ebay never occured to me.

I'm hoping my ticket-partner still has the presale code!

                            • It's looking pretty bleak vs dejon.

If it could have ended last Sunday, great! but he has Kipper for 2 goose eggs this week while my +/- has plummeted and his has continued upwards.

Scummy tactics have been of little help so far.
