Certainly the pyramids of Egypt or Mexico were greater and built long before though I guess if you have nothing else then you play up what you do have.

Did you think this masjid was venerated because of the architechture? Could it perhaps have been because the 10th and 11th awaited Imams of the Shi'ite religion were both buried there?

Sloww - I'm curious how you think the situation would be different if Clinton decided to invade in, say, 1996 (or pick any other year you like).
I wish people would quit saying invasion. We were under the provisions of a cease fire, not a peace treaty.
Had Clinton sent the message that it wouldn't be tolerated, domino effect. Doing, or more to the point, NOT doing, bad precedent was set.

If Bush has lost even a Texas red neck like Slowwhand...
He hasn't lost me, I'm rapidly losing my compassion for the Iraqi population. If they would get involved more, and more quickly, we'd have been gone.

And Mobius, blow me. OUR policies, since your wimpass refuses to take any responsibility as a leading nation, was to oust Hussein. Like I just said.
Don't like it? Tough stuff. The man is out, and now we need to be gone.

The fact is, Bush is showing a lot more compassion and faith in Iraq than I am. It;s their stick pit, let them have it. Someone else like Hussein takes over, fine. The people had their chance given them.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead

That's nice. It doesn't really address the question of what should have been done, though. What did Clinton not do? Or, more to the point, what should he have done? I'm looking for something more specific than "something" or "nothing".

We invaded. We entered by force and intended to occupy. What else do you need?

BTW this shrine isn't ancient and instead is a modern construction. It's still bad but at least nothing historic was destroyed.

Just look at all the rebar and concrete in the construction. It is certainly a modern building.

I know exactly why it was built. I was explaining my personal impressions of what it looked like.

Is it just me, or does Newspeak and Bush support seem to go together?

The Al Askari Mosque or Al Askari Shrine is a Shiite Muslim holy site located in the Iraqi city of Samarra. It is one of the most important Shiite mosques in the world, built in 944. The remains of the tenth and eleventh Shia Imams, Ali al-Hadi and his son Hassan al-Askari rest at the mosque, and it also contains a shrine to the twelfth, or hidden Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi. The site is also known as the shrine of Ali al-Hadi, or the al-Hadhrah al-Askariyah.

1€ says it's been destroyed, rebuilt, and renovated quite a few times since.

The mosque is old, but the golden dome isn't, and it's that that are referred to when it's said it's "new".

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Well, they've switched back to killing each other, for now. Temporary respite and regrouping period. Not that Bush will use it wisely.

But it is incredibly holy to Shi'ites.

CNN.com has a interesting piece of speculation. They think it was an al Qaeda attack.
