From a rather observant Letter to the Editor in my paper (yes, Jyllands-Posten) yesterday,

The broad, popular opinion in Denmark has for the past 50 years been directed solely against violent, oppressive, totalitarian ideologies. It has not been a matter of ethnicity, religion or political views - but of defending Western, democratic values.

So when everyone but the far left wingers seek to distance themselves from Islamic fundamentalism, that is what is reflected, and nothing else.

It is therefore an extremely unpleasant type of agitation when the defense of democracy and human rights is being portrayed as ethnophobia, islamophobia, and generally likened to anti-Semitism.

It's just that when you've got like a billion compatriots each you're bound to just keep fighting over it forever unless one of you wises up. As in, no more "we only seek to defend our way of life--and when I say that, it counts as a valid argument. When they say it, it's just propaganda, even if they believe it with equal vehemence and are working on information that leads them to believe it!"

How about nobodies killed anybody for insulting Danes, but the insulting Danes are being used as an excuse for acts of violence against peoiple who have nothing to do with the situation?

We're discussing whether or not we should 'understand' cretins using flimsy excuses to kill people or not. Whether it is OK for people in Syria or Nigeria to do things that we would universally condemn if the local skin-heads did it.
