This involved the granting of an interview to a friendly and safe media outlet, in which the Vice-President did what the public and media was demanding, which was to take responsibility and apologize, while showing the humanity and compassion that had been notably absent until then.
      100 % correct analysis

It's pretty obvious what went down. This is old hat and damn transparent.

      • It wouldn't matter one bit if Morris was always wrong, his question requires an answer and the only logical answer is Cheney hid away because he didn't want other people finding out he was under the influence. Teddy Kennedy did the same thing, he took off and showed up the next day to fess up to driving the car.

At least you're consistent. You apply the same rigorous logical standards to examining current events as you do when dealing with ancient civilizations and prehistory.

You are now officially out of touch. It's been noted for a while but you're just offbase here. Every single person I know is talking about this and most of them are pretty pissed that the Vice President for being a dumbass.

Might want to actually live here to make those kinds of [mis] judgements.

After his "friend" (read: lobbiest who was lobbying him) got shot in the face and chest Cheney tried to hide it and then blamed the other guy for Cheney's drinking & hunting followed by not bothering to look before he pulled the trigger.

That speaks boat loads about the man's lack of character.
            Yep

He's always been a bastard and this incident is a microcosm of his lifelong bastardness.

I'd consider that a compliment. Not my fault you're ignorant. (And naive).

When it comes to the average Japanese opinion then maybe I'll turn back on Dinodoc's "give a ****" machine.

Are you saying you think he shot the dude on purpose, or do you think that he shot the dude accidentally, and only decided to use it to boost his image later? Either assumption is idiotic.

                    Regarding hunting quail:

I'm an experienced hunter, including some quail hunting. Berz's remarks about drinking & hunting amuse me. I've never been shooting or hunting with anyone who was drinking before we left, or drank while we were handling firearms. That seems about as intelligent as driving while impaired. I would never agree to go shooting with someone who has been drinking. Cheney's one beer at lunch 3 hours before they left would probably be ok, but it wouldn't inspire confidence honestly.

Secondly, what these people were doing wouldn't be familiar to most of us. It's a private game ranch with people on horseback driving game, numerous dogs etc. It probably should be called shooting quail rather than hunting quail. They arrive by vehicle, coordinate by cell phone. In comparison my quail hunting consisted of me and one or two cousins and a dog walking through my grandfather's upper field. We probably averaged a quail or two every time we went out, the field wasn't that big. The differences are huge. We were almost silent when we hunted, no vehicles, no phones, no one beating the game. It's simply a lot easier to keep track of your environment when it's simple.

So it doesn't surprise me that Cheney would lose track of a member of his party. That alone can't be blamed for causing this accident of course. There's the matter of following the rules governing the positions of the shooters in the line, which basically exists to keep all guns pointed at least slightly forward of the line and all humans at least slightly behind the line. It's hard to know who exactly messed this up without knowing exactly who was where at the time. Whatever you believe happened, someone broke this rule for sure. Finally there is the ultimate rule, which is to never point your weapon in a direction that you don't know is a safe direction, and Cheney most definitely broke that rule. It sounds like he either followed a bird out of his assigned shooting arc (thus breaking the discipline of the line as well) or simply didn't maintain a constant awareness of what was in that arc in the first place. Needless to say, I won't be extending an invitation to the Big D!ck to join me on a hunting expedition anytime soon.
                    He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

                        • LoA,

Agreed for the most part, Personal lives shouldn't be necessarilyout in front of the public, but at some point they do and when they do it is an object lesson in the person character as to how they respond.

For example, personally I thought the Clinton Monica-gate was way over the top and partisan activity to boot by the GOP, otoh it absolutely cemented my opinion of Clinton as a lying sleaze.

Likewise Cheney's response to this matter I thought showed his true colors. His feeling that matters of this nature (and by extension matters of the admin) need to be concealed or minimally spun to best advantage at all times.

On another note though, I like Drake understand this is essentially over though at this point. No further ramifications are going to happen despite the fondest wishes of some posters here.

                            • From what I understand, we need to keep in mind that Cheney has always loathed the press, really loathed it. Now, whether or not that's an admirable trait in a leading politician is one thing (which should ultimately be decided on by the voters, as it has been - twice), but it does go a long way in explaining why he was reluctant to break the news himself. He has no respect for the media, and does not want to associate with them any more than is strictly necessary. I think that runs as a defining theme all through his years in public office.
