Wow. That was even sleazier than Stronach's move last year.

It also means that the NDP inches closer to holding the balance of power...

Maybe Martin can cross the floor next and be named Deputy PM.

Yeah, David Emerson is propping up a Conservative government against a confidence motion.

Crossing the floor on an issue is nowhere near as bad as crossing immediately after an election on a power grab.

He appointed a non-MP to a post? Can he do that? That's more than a little odd.

              Not the first time IIRC.

edit: It happened in Quebec: not sure about the Feds.
              What?

Indeed. It smells a little funny given all they've said about accountability and such, but there's nothing wrong with it, nor is it even that unusual historically.

Don't the Americans do the same thing with their cabinet?

The American cabinet is a completely different beast.

it's been done over here before, but you have to go back quite a long way to find someone appointed to the cabinet from outside the commons or lords.

The US cabinent secretaries are rarely congressmen because here you can't hold multiple political positions.

Sure the issue was a cute little cabinet seat.

I'm surprised to hear you defending Belinda Stronach when you can simply tar both houses.

But according to the brilliant mathematician Layton in his "victory" speech, they already do hold the balance of power!

That's right, Jacko. And in the near future, when the NDP is elected into power - every Canadian citizen will drive smart cars. We'll each have personal windmills powering our compost heaps - the collective benefits of such going towards building Natives free housing, and putting more one-legged lesbian Ugandans in the house as MPs.

This is the future of Canada. A single healthcare for all, regardless of how aggravated / sick you may become in waiting, while adhering to that ineffecient standard. Mandatory welfare for visible socialists, and free post secondary education for anyone above the age of 15. Uncommon, but completely fair ball if done for a good reason, like putting a representative of a major region into cabinet (Montreal being the second largest metropolis in the country).

Emerson is very capable? Harper wants someone with smarts and experience to help solve trade issues with the US?

If he's the best person for the job (international trade) I don't have a problem with it.

It also solves the problem of representation for Vancouver.
