    Finland rises in my estimation based on this. I now see them as a legitimate gold medal threat.

    maybe its my Canadian bias but I still see canada as a gold medal threat. I just want to think that they will have to have a few offensive explosions

            I think Canada is always a gold medal threat. Finland has already surpassed all my expectations, so a semifinal spot would be icing on the cake.

            Anyway, this was a great win and not an unimportant one either. The Finns avoid the Slovaks, Russians and Swedes now and get to play the USA. While the USA is still a very dangerous opponent, the other teams in the group scare me a lot more.

              Of course Canada is still favourite. This means nothing really, early round games. You think if we meet again, that Canada can't score? I don't think so.

              So you can't say a lot about it now.. not yet... except we have some good things going on, 4 games, only 2 allowed goals, both on PP. So 5 on 5, no set backs at all.

              Also not yet single period lost, tight game, so that's pretty good. Looks like it'll be us and US. Dangerous team, but I'd pick them over the rest of the three so.. pretty good.

              Pat Quinn sucks though. The Toronto threats are on ice, Berg for us, McCabe for Canada, plus Quinn coaching? Uh.. I'd suppose Staal will be playing the next game, because no scoring for a long time, it's pretty obvious some forwards have failed.. If Staal isn't playing, I'd say Quinn should be fired during the tournament .

                And this is my opinion, but the defense is totally wrong. The offense, though not effective for a while is still skilled and monster lines.. but defense is just big and gets beaten in the corners too many times.. Pronger???? Isn't that like Hatcher for the team US? They are kind of similar, then throw in Foote, Blake (well at least he's ok).. it's big and kind of slow. Everyone is doing well in their individual teams, but when you throw them all in one group, it's nto working now. Maybe they can get it working though.. What I'm missing seeing is the guys who are comfortable with the puck and can skate well.. like Jovanovski and Niedermayer. Also there's something wrong when Thornton seems to be the only one making great plays as a playmaker. But guys like Sakic are top notch so.. I guess they just had an off night.

                  What's odd to me is that Iginla seemed to be getting very little ice time the last couple games. McCabe seemed to be on the ice a lot, God knows why.

                      Agreed. The US is the team I would most want to play on the other side. They are still good enough that they could probably pull an upset but I agree they seem fundamentally weaker than the other 3 teams

                        Analyst s have hinted that there must be "more than we know" about Iginla's playing time. I took it to mean he's nursing an injury.

                        McCabe is the 7th D-man and only played a couiple of 5 on 5 shifts against Finland. He does get substantial powerplay time though. So far McCabe has not been very impressive at all.

                            There are no single Kazakh in team Kazakhstan. All players and coaches are Russians, live in Russia and play in Russian league. I wounder if Kazakhstan have a national league or arenas to play hockey. All those players have little chance to be selected in Russian national team, so they just made a double citizenship (it's allowed both in Russia and Kazakhstan to be a citizen of both countries at the same time) and play for Kazakhstan.
                            So, Russia-Kazakhstan game was actually team Russia-1 vs. team Russia-2 game. Most of the players know each other very well, coaches know each others style (they train teams in the same league), etc. For players of team Russia-2 it was a good chance to prove they deserve more than playing for a national team of our neighbour.

                                He's not getting enough powerplay time.

                                He's the obvious choice for the power play, but Blake and Pronger seem to be the first power play line.
