  • OK, maybe he was hard to work with. But he was a winning coach. And no one ever hired him. I suppose all the white coaches were all great to work with?

Before last year, how many black coaches were there? Tony Dungy, Herm Edwards, Ray Rhodes (4 yrs with Philly, 1 with GB before being fired in 99), Denny Green (who had 2 seasons off). Am I forgetting anyone?

    • Marvin Lewis.

And then last year you had Romeo Crennel and Lovie Smith.

That's 4 right now, out of 32... which is 12.5%, which is about the number of blacks in the US population. Before you say that isn't the number of blacks as players, a lot of coaches were NOT NFL players. Belichick never played in the NFL for one. Cowher is another who never played in the NFL.

        • No, he mentioned Dungy. That's the first guy he said.

Though I forgot to count Herm Edwards... 5/32, then 15.6%! Well over the % of blacks in the US.

Cowher played in the NFL from 1979-85. He was a linebacker / special teamer for the Eagles and Browns. He actually broke Titans' coach Jeff Fisher's leg and ended his playing career during a game in 1985.

You're right, though, plenty of NFL coaches have no NFL playing experience, including Bellichick, Brian Billick, Joe Gibbs, Jon Gruden, Romeo Crennel, and others

            • I saw this in the Detroit Free Press:

Al Michaels was traded from ABC to NBC for a cartoon bunny, four rounds of golf and Olympic highlights. The rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a bunny created by Walt Disney in the 1920s before he invented Mickey Mouse, were transferred from NBC Universal to The Walt Disney Co. as part of the agreement to release the broadcaster from his contract with ABC and ESPN. As part of the deal, NBC sold ESPN cable rights to Friday coverage of the next four Ryder Cups through 2014, and granted ESPN increased usage of Olympic highlights through 2012 and other NBC properties through 2011. NBC, in turn, gets expanded highlight rights to ABC and ESPN events.

              • There are actually now 7 African-American head coaches in the NFL.

                Tony Dungy, Indy
                Lovie Smith, DA Bearssss
                Romeo Crennel, Cleveland
                Herman Edwards, KC
                Denny Green, Arizona
                Marvin Lewis, Cinci
                Ray Rhodes, Oakland

                That's 7/32 = 21.9%

Pretty sure you can add Lovie Smith to that list.

                  • I'm not sure why the NFL is so concerned about minorities. I think there's a top 5 player at every position who is black, and some of the most successful coaches (including three coach of the year candidates and the coach of the year) are black.

                    • Confirming Lovie never played in the pros. Won 3 Texas HS state champioships as an end and LB at Big Sandy HS in Texas, 2x All-America, 3x All-MAC as a linebacker and strong safety for Tulsa. Wasn't drafted by NFL, went straight into coaching.

Ray Rhodes isn't the HC in Oakland .

And I forgot about Denny. I don't pay much attention to 'Zona in the first place .

The point isn't that the % of black head coaches exceeds the % of blacks in the US population, but rather that it is so far below the % of black NFL players (70%?).

But really, the representation of blacks in the front office (where they do the hiring of coaches) is much lower than in the coaching ranks.

I'm glad that Al Michaels will be joining John Madden for SNF. Kinda funny how they said he got traded for a cartoon bunny, etc.

Like I said, there are plenty of coaches who don't have NFL experience. Just because you played in the NFL doesn't mean you are automatically qualified to be a coach.

And I never said that an NFL coach needed NFL experience. I'd just like to see more black head coaches.
