  • Kid will be happy:

The Rams' persistence paid off by not letting Panthers linebacker Will Witherspoon go to the airport and letting him fly to New Orleans for a visit.

Witherspoon agreed with the Rams on a six-year, $33 million contract that includes $15 million in guarantees. Witherspoon turned down an offer to stay with the Panthers for close to $11.5 million to sign.

The Saints were trying to be persuasive and get him signed, but Witherspoon stayed in St. Louis and got the deal with the Rams instead.

In the past few days, the Rams have added defensive tackle La'Roi Glover, Witherspoon and safety Corey Chavous to their defense.

Wow... Glover, Witherspoon, and Chavous. That defense is getting a very nice overhaul.

          • Hmm, I'm worried that Snyder's getting us into Salary Cap Jail again. Somehow we always manage in the end, though.

I think Lloyd and Randle El will fight for the second position in training camp. Randle El does much better in the slot, so if Lloyd can materialize into a good #2, Washington will be scary. We had a fairly good passing attack with one wide receiver, and now we'll have three (four if Patten stays healthy).

I'm wondering why nobody's snapping up Lavar. He's really quite good, but the Redskins LBs are fine without him and he's too costly for us.

            • I'm amazed by the Randle El signing... I never thought that he'd get that much, and I didn't think that the 'Skins would take him (especially after trading for Lloyd). El's a great slot receiver, mediocre #2. His ball handling skills are a little shaky, and he has an infuriating tendency to run in circles on punt returns. He's a great character guy off the field, but on the field he's a guy that you'll love one minute and hate the next. He'll be a good fit next to Moss, Lloyd, and Cooley, but don't expect him to take over games.

I had hoped that the Steelers could bring him back at a modest price, but I didn't want them to break the bank on him. I think that, though he's a solid player, 'skins fans may be regretting this move in a few years.

Why don't the 'skins ever keep their draft picks? When was the last time they had a complete draft class?

                • The Redskins offensive sets should change dramatically.

This year, they've lost their pure TE (Robert Royal), so expect to see Cooley lining up as a TE much more often. That will probably make room for more sets with Sellars in the backfield. However, they're also going to be using three WR sets more, and only rarely using single WR sets.

                  • Oh, scratch that, they signed Fauria of New England.

They have a solid group of pass-catchers now. Even if one of the free agents turns out to be a bust, the passing attack should be solid.

                              New Smurfs . I don't think they have a WR over 6 foot .
