Crap post. It completely ignores that trades where a good wage can be had without a college degree have decreased greatly over the last 50 years (even the last 20 years) with the movement of manufacturing jobs to robotics and overseas.

    • Bull****.

If you hadn't heard, there is a greying effect everywhere in the economies of Western states.

Kids getting there tickets today in plumbing, pipefitting, electrical, etc... are in the cat birds seat with no college required.

Carpenters will do well too, just not as well.

      • I'd like to know how you outsourced the plumbers local to overseas.

I know you think they'll take your crap, but I didn't think you'd be that literal.

          Pfft.

That's a what a journeyman gets as he finishes his ticket. He or she got paid to work while getting the ticket as well.

How many freaking plumbers do you think an area needs?! Same with pipefitters, electricians? It isn't going to be the same number of people who lost their jobs when manufacturing plants left. Manufacturing plants made towns function, and when they left, the towns just about died (see: Flint, Michigan). There are no where near the plumbers, electricians, etc, etc, to make up for those manufacturing jobs that aren't there anymore.

I mean why else are there more American in college (per capita) than at any time in US history? And by a LOT! It's also the reason why college tuitions are rising exponentially (far higher demand and marginal increase in supply = far higher price)

              • You think you're hot **** Asher. You are gonna get paid about the same as the guy who clears your **** when it gets clogged.

Grab some humility, it will serve you well when dealing with tradespeople as you undoubtedly will have to at some point. They like nothing better than ****ing over large bags of wind who think being pampered in education (that's all the toffs who went to Uni) somehow makes them better than other people.

I've never said anything about being better than tradespeople. I'm talking about incomes.

Statistically, if you don't go to college you're just gonna make less money.

A guy with 40 years of experience in compsci with a compsci degree will make a lot more money than a guy with 40 years of experience in plumbing as a tradesperson. It's a simple economical argument.

You're living in a dream world.

My uncle on my dad's side is a tradesperson -- refridgerator repair. He doesn't make a lot of money, to say the least...

How many homes are being built in the US today? More than 10 years ago?

                        You need trades.

No, they will not replace the factory jobs that left. However they will have to do their thing whether for factory workers or for office buildings and residences of the knowledge economy. They will be needed nonetheless.

Pretending that being without college is somehow a ticket to the burger assmebly line, as if it's either Asher or Ashif, is pretty ignorant of how modern society works.

And you could easily end up at a call centre for HP help desk.

                            What's your point?

                            • I'm overqualified for callcentre work.

Even when I interned at IBM I was many ranks higher up than that.

I was ring 7 at IBM, callcenter employees are 3-5 (5 being supervisors).

I think you are reading your own biases into statements never made. No one made the argument that without a college education, you flip burgers (in fact, I believe Asher said that with certain degrees you flip burgers, however wrong he may be is irrelevent). But the fact remains that college is the new high school, and the dumbing down of college is because of the changes in the economy which have made high school no longer sufficient for the majority of good paying jobs, as it used to be before when you could work an assembly line and get paid well for it.
