Let me know when you can come up with other examples of picketing funeral incidents, DD and I will be happy to use them in addition to Shepherd.

Or, maybe you can at least try to understand the concept that when one belongs to an ostracized minority group and then hears about such terrible attacks on his fellow members of that group, they tend to be concerned about their rights and their dignity as humans. That is one reason why I use Shepherd as an example -- what happened to him is relevant to me, and countless other gays across the world.

Well, in the context of this discussion, I'm not sure it does matter. From Phelps's POV, Jews should be seen (preparing to rebuild their temple so God can smite the Sodomites and spare evangelicals the effort), and not heard.

Several years ago a man named "Gay" walked into a gay bar in Roanoke, Virginia and started shooting people. He was upset because he had been picked on so often because of his last name. Several gay patrons died. Phelps and his crew made a trip all the way down here to picket the funerals of the victims. AFAIK no one assaulted them and there were no lawsuits.

I repeat my question. Does anyone know if Phelps or his group have ever won a lawsuit due to someone's response to his protests? There are many places in which the police might take his activities as disturbing the police and would arrest him. In these places he'd have a hard time succesfully sueing.

Well then by all means add:

                - the funerals of various AIDS victims (this is what Phelps was doing before Shepherd)
                - Barry Goldwater's funeral (I'm not making that up)
                - the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq
                - the St. Patrick's Cathedral memorial service for the NYFD firemen who died on 9/11

and the one that really pissed me off:

                - the Pittsburgh memorial service for Mr. Rogers

He's a real piece of work, isn't he?

In both cases, the picketing is equally appalling.
Yea, I think people like Phelps actually do a great deal of good for gays, making those who hate them look absolutely, disgustingly absurd and hateful.

Just like how many people in the '60s were indifferent to racism, and it took Bull Connor to shake them out of it. Phelps, one can hope, is shaking everyone out of their indifference to anti-gay biggotry.

I'm still disappointed that the King's legal counsel concluded they couldn't successfully sue him for anything.

Remember to gather all your friends to celebrate when Phelps' time comes. I'd say bring beers, bring your gay friends, soldiers, and just people who dont' like this dude. We'll see how they like it.

I'm sure the reason Phelps protested at Goldwater's funeral is because Goldwater had said he didn't care if gays were in the military. Famously he stated that the only thing that mattered to him was if they could "shoot straight".
