And I was under the impression that Opeth was "progressive death metal". They have songs that certainly contain lots of talentless, look-at-me death vocals that instantly remove any credibility they may have.

The people who listen to crap like that, along with System of a Down-style bands, are all usually psychologically touched in some way or another. Whether they suffer from clinical depression, some form or paranoia, maybe just neglected as children. Musically talented, they are not. They just get their angry finger-to-society music and a bunch of people can relate to it and seem to think that makes it good.

From Pitchfork I recognize Fiona Apple (but I had no idea she still did music), Franz Ferdinand (I'm tired of this sound of music), Kanye West (Katrina), Cam'ron (I think through Albert Speer), and New Pornographers (the only altrock band in there and they really aren't even altrock- wow).

You really just have no clue do you? It's not even worth arguing with you. By your logic I'd have to be some long-haired depressed parent hating makeup wearing teen to listen to their music.

I think that people who like bands like Matchbox 20 and Nickelback don't have the mental capacity to appreciate anything that deviates from the cookie cutter 3 chord processed bull****. How's that for a generalization? The difference is, I've listened to the bands you like. You clearly haven't listened to the one's I do.

Had you chosen to attack some poser band like Cradle of Filth, your argument might have some merit. Your problem is that you can't differentiate between the two because you have no ****ing idea what you're talking about.

I have two: one is bipolar and the other has some extreme angst issues ("f*ck society, man!")

I've heard two of Opeth's songs (I have one friend who is predominately into death metal and grindcore and other monstrocities, and he's an Opeth fan): Powerslave and Demon of the Fall. Both are really terrible. They try to insert some melody but it fails because the vocals are so poor and the general cohesion of the song is terrible.

And I'm not sure what exactly you think an ass-kissing interview has to prove.

Almost anyone with any resemblence of taste can recognise that.

do you have the B sides album? I downloaded that one. I haven't listened to it yet though.

Hypnotize could have been a really great song, but it is ruined by that awful singer.

Asher and I discussed this one time. He doesn't like when they were Matchbox 20 as much as when they were Twenty.

Some of their best songs come from when they were the folk-rock band Tabitha's Secret. "Dear Joan" comes to mind, especially when it's performed live.
