  • Or what about the Mulroney PC which had majorities based in the West and QC.

Where was the protection for Ontario?
Read in my morning paper today, in a letter by an NDP attack dog against Harper:

'in Toronto where all elections are decided'..

Yeah, Ontario is so shafted by the current system.

QC getting the best of the Newfs isn't a federal matter, as far as I know. They used their geography to deny the ability to build power lines to the States in order to devalue the hydro capacity and pick it up for a lower price. In order to do anything about it the federal government would have had to step far beyond the bounds it normally operates within.

And exactly how much do you think that the NEP cost Alberta? How long ago was that? Has the federal government made a move to grab any of the money you guys are drilling out of the ground right now? It was an ill-considered plan 25 years ago that was trashed after a couple of years. Do you see me *****ing about the moves made by Trudeau during the October Crisis as proof that poor little QC is being exploited by our current system?

          ?

Perception doesn't make it so. Go look at Mulroney's governments and where they had their base of support.

IMO the Federal Government should step in. And it doesn't, and Quebec repeatedly ignores NFLD's pleas to renegotiate the deal, which is downright criminal in my opinion. It's like defrauding an old lady or a mentally retarded child.

The Trudeau moves during the October Crisis did not destroy an economy for ~5 years, and they were not at the expense of Quebec and the gain of Central Canada.

There is a huge difference. The NEP was devised as a cheap way for central Canada to get cheaper gas and for Ottawa to collect more revenues. It was more than an "ill-considered plan" it was an insidious exploit by the Liberals since they had no support in Alberta to begin with. They had nothing to lose.

To step in would be to step as far beyond the bounds of federalism as the NEP did.

                    They did lose, though.

Quebec was turned to the dark side and we had 9 years of Mulroney.

The NEP got tossed out, and it's never going to be resurrected.

The Federal government has no say in interprovincial agreements? How did Meech Lake happen then?

Uh...a Canada-wide agreement on the Constitution and a biprovincial agreement on power resources are equivalent?

Both are agreements between provinces, one on a larger scale than the other.

                          • KH,

I personally don't mind the idea of the Senate being based on 4 regions, with a 1/4 going to each. It would be at least balanced. Honestly I don't think there will be many systems where everyone will be happy, but you do have to admit that there is a real disparity in regions at the moment.

Although I would like the Fed's to explain to each and every province why being in this Federation is beneficial to them., and by them I don't mean the Feds.
What if your words could be judged like a crime? "Creed, What If?"

                            • Quebec denied the use of its territory. The federal government has no say in forcing a province to let another province use its territory.

The federal government should be able to force renegotiation of the price Quebec is paying for the hydro. It's patently unfair.
