I see. Now, are minutes cheap in Europe? Like, would it be convenient for me to call France, or would it be prohibatively expensive?
Just take the day trip to Paris for less than £30 if you really want to talk to a Frenchman.

Anything international will be prohibitively expensive. Anything national shouldn't be too bad. If you want to call internationally at any sensible price, you'll need to find a landline.

That's strange. In the US any call made to a number in the US, Canada, or (increasingly) Mexico is considered domestic so no international toll charges have to be paid. Also EVERY phone contract always comes with free domestic long distance (meaning any number in North America is free of long distance charges though you still have to pay for air time).
Not in the UK. National calls mean national calls. Most mobile plans here come in two ways - pay as you go, with no free minutes, but no line rental, and contract, where you get free minutes/texts (either off peak, anytime, any network, etc. depending on plan) but pay a monthly fee for it.
Even Ireland is international in the UK.

vodafone has a reputation for having expensive calls.
'pay as you go' is definately the way to go though. try to make all your calls from landlines anyway as they will be cheaper, but then you can have a no monthly fee mobile to carry around with you to receive calls for free, or make organizational type texts and calls when neccesary

Northern Ireland too?
I'm not sure.

At Oxford it's usually the other way - the only landlines we have are phonecard ones that are horrendously expensive. Mobiles are the only way to make calls, realistically.

You have two options that spring immediately to my mind.
1) Fly with a low cost airline, a quick (and thus random) check on Easy Jet showed me that I could get a flight from London Stansted to Paris Charles de Gaulle for £21 in late March, and a return flight for £15. Adding in taxes the full cost was under £50.
Forget that though, there are often deals with airlines that give free travel (excepting ~£15 airport tax). I note for example that Ryanair currently offers the following free flights
Fares are exclusive of taxes fees & charges which do not exceed £15.20
2) Your other option is to get in a car with a bunch of mates. You can get the Eurotunnel return for ~£50 IIRC, petrol money will be another £50. French tolls will be another £10 or so. Between four of you its comes in at under £30 a person. I'm sure Provost Harrison will drive you.

I'd be up for a trip to Paris And yes, it's very cheap, I've flown there for under £50 and the tunnel is *very* cheap by car. However you have to get to Folkstone.
