A passenger, Mary Gardner, told WTVJ in Miami that the man ran frantically down the aisle from the rear of the plane, arms flailing, and that the woman accompanying him said that Alpizar was bipolar and had not taken his medication, according to The Associated Press.
Maybe she should have made sure he took his medication before they got on the plane?

I agree with you Slow, I was just having a bit of fun. Security forces have got to play the percentages in these situations, and those guys did. It's one life against 300 (?).
Do yourself a favor and stay out of law enforcement.
You truly expect that in the heat of the moment, marshals would stand down while a psychological profile is run on the guy?
Do you not understand that no matter which way he's facing, a detonating explosive has the same effect?
Would you wait and find out that he's lying, and if he's not, have all blown up?
You're a moron, man.
Oh yeah let's get personal...
And you consider yourself an adult?

It's always unfortunate when something like this happens, but I can't find any fault with the air marshals here. I'm glad we have them on duty, and I'm glad they seem capable of doing their jobs. When somebody claims to have a bomb and acts like this, you've got to take them down, because there is the distinct possiblity that they are telling the truth. I don't know what the deal was with his medication, but on the surface it does seem odd that the woman with him didn't tell anyone he was bipolar and medication-less before the incident - or let him get on the plane in the first place with no meds.
Lime roots and treachery!
"Eventually you're left with a bunch of unmemorable posters like Cyclotron, pretending that they actually know anything about who they're debating pointless crap with." - Drake Tungsten
Time constraints wouldn't allow the marshalls the time they needed to make a wise decision, so they went on the side of caution and apparently gave this guy ample opportunity to avoid getting shot. However, why would someone with a bomb wait until the plane lands? Why would they run off the plane they're supposedly intent on blowing up? I dont know, it seems to me once they got him out on the tarmack the intensity of the situation should have ratcheted down a bit. Given enough time to consider events, I would have aimed for his leg. He didnt behave like a bomber, just someone with a loose screw or 2 upstairs. Really cant fault the marshalls here, someone put them in the position of thinking the worst and they reacted accordingly.

Typical meaningless gum flapping. You get no post count increase for that. You realize that, don't you?

Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

And Berz, you don't aim for legs. This isn't a John Wayne western.

I would have aimed for his leg if I had enough time to evaluate the situation. Looks like these guys had enough time, but I understand the alternative is even worse than killing a guy who is mentality unstable - he has a bomb and is able to set it off if I shoot him in the leg and the bomb is big enough to kill people in the area.
I'm not familiar with training for air marshals., so like the rest of you, I'm talking out of my ass.
That said, (more) training for situations with unstable guys like this could have possibly prevented this tragedy. It would even help with unstable guys that really do have bombs.

You're absolutely right we need to train our unstable people better!
