New Labour certainly have a thing or two in common with 17th century puritans.

Revd. Increase Mather (if that really is his name) would have been comfortable in this government and would certainly have enjoyed working the phrase 'Binge Drinking' into his condemnations of Pagan Partying.

Pardon - Are you saying Cotton Mather WAS poor, weak, and unlearned, and contemporary fundies are too, or that Cotton Mather didnt want Christians to be seen as poor weak and unlearned, and neither do the fundies? It strikes me that CM has in common with many fundies a desire for political power and wealth - but CM and IM were deeply learned, in ways that the modern fundies strikingly are not.

By the way, I always liked Mather House, though some would call it a modernist monstrosity, overwhelming Dunster House, its neo-Georgian neighbor.

Happy Holidays does reduce the importance of Christmas. That's the whole point of the phrase.
The whole point of the phrase is that retailers are trying to appeal to the widest audience possible. They want to get nonChristians to come in and buy things as well as Christians. For a capitalist you seem to be missing the capitalist reasons companies are using the "Happy Holidays" phrase.

          • so, should we blame Bush or the Jews for this?

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

                  • oh, and then there simchas torah, when its also customary to drink whiskey, but not considered halachically correct to get completely sloshed, though some come close.

Last Simchas Torah we went to our Conservative/Masorti shul first, where POTM was scheduled to do a Torah reading - and then later went to Chabad, where they were still doing hakufas. I was offered a shot of whiskey (Southern Comfort, IIRC) but kept it at that - to take an additional shot in the midst of the hakufas would have looked odd, to say the least.

                    • While we're talking about Jews and alcohol, LOTM, do you personally drink Mevouchal (sp?) wine, simple Kosher wine, or ordinary wine?

I was like that too. Whenevr I eat at a specific Jewish family, I get "kosher non-mevouchal" wine served. I was curious about that "mevouchal" thing (this is the French spelling), and looked about it on the internet. Apparently, a real orthodox can only drink kosher wine if it had been handled by jews from production to the glass. If a goy has touched the kosher wine (or the container) at any moment, the wine becomes impure. Mevouchal wine, OTOH, is boiled at some point, and can then be freely handled by goyim without it being a problem for the orthodox Jew.

In France, where we tend to actually enjoy wine , Mevouchal wine is extremely marginal. However, the French site where I got the info told me that it was much more common in the US.

                          • Man, fundies are freaking dumb. What in the world is "anti-Christmas" about wanting to include everyone (and include the entire month in a commercial orgy of gift buying)? I highly doubt that Walmart and Target are anti-Christmas. Hell, I bet their CEO's have lavish Christmas parties.

That's why I support the fundie boycott - if the Christians feel excluded, the capitalistic reason disappears.

Yeah, like Christians aren't going to spend in those stores during the Holiday Season .
