Electricity does not transport well beyond ~1000 km. And solar power is not cheap with the current state of the industry.
True. Advances in either transmission efficiencies or in storage capabilities will have a large impact on temporally challenged energy sources like wind and solar.
He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!
Hey Goldmember, Hey Goldmember!
Naw, Odin will still be able to get his gas at Walmart for $5.88.
$5.85 with a prepaid walmart card

Woo. Anyway it's dark then so solar would be useless, my point stands I think.
Indeed, micro-generation is widely tipped as the way forward. We'd all have a miniature wind-farm on our roof. We need to develop the National Grid though as "exports" to it on a small-scale need to be able to be accepted.

But yeah, power draw is higher in summer than in winter. Even in Canada.
People often don't use electricity to heat their homes, whereas there's no choice but to use electricity to cool them.
I"m pretty sure peak time in Quebec is the holidays and that winter is generally higher than summer.
I'll try get an actual source this tiem
EDIT :
It seems there is a peak both in winter and summer, but the bigger one is in winter.
Some CRAP SOURCE http://www.cottagehaven.com/magazine...ment/wind2.htm
"Winds in Canada are stronger in the winter, so power generated by wind turbines is higher in the winter. This is also the time of peak power demand, as electricity is in greater demand for heating and lighting. Wind also generates more power during the day than at night. This again matches peak loads. "

How? Suburbia is a child of the automobile, and when driving from the 'burbs to work becomes too expensive, we will be forced to change.
Driving from the suburbs won't be nearly so expensive to intiate a re-urban settlement. You are just trying to be idealistic because that is what YOU want to see happen. Average gas prices will not hit $6 a gallon (in 2005 dollars) in our lifetimes unless some super major catastrophe happens. At worst it may hover around $3/gal, which is not nearly enough to get people to massive flock to the inner city.

One nice thing about walmart is that I've bought gas there for more than 50 a gallon cents less than what other gas stations in the area sell for. Usually it's just around 10 cents though.

Electricity Forum Latest News and Information For The North American Electrical Industry
here we go :
"
Two of the three Canadian subregions -- TranEnergie in Quebec and the Maritimes in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island -- are winter peaking systems.
In the United States, New York and New England are summer peaking systems.
The province of Ontario become a summer peaking system last summer."
(this was written in 2001)
It seems the average cooler temperature in Quebec is enough to make it a winter peaking system as opposed to Ontario and US.
This may change eventually though, since it's a pretty small difference.
