Businesses also tend to draw more power than households. Office buildings tend to be better-lit than homes.

I have a real job and could afford one but no car.

Partly environmental, partly because it's so ridiculously expensive and partly because I have no need of one. Live in the town center, get the train to work (10 miles) etc.

But yeah, power draw is higher in summer than in winter. Even in Canada.

People often don't use electricity to heat their homes, whereas there's no choice but to use electricity to cool them.

If we are talking about alternatives to oil, I'm assuming that also applies to gas which is the main alternative to electricity for house heating?

Natural gas does tend to be used for heating, yes.

But natural gas is no less a vanishing resource than is oil. In fact, they generally come from the same wells...

That's exactly my point. So if we are talking about "eco friendly" alternatives to oil you can't say peak energy demand is in the afternoon and not count gas heating in the evening as part of that energy demand.

Why do you need 'home cooling' in Canada? Do you get hot summers too?

Average July high is ~26C for Montreal, but you get a week of ~35C every July

                    Crazy.

It's great living somewhere so mild but it does make where everyone else lives seem incredibly extreme.

Don't forget to factor in the humidity in Canada as well. It's not uncommon to get silly high levels in Toronto.

Smog and 100% humidity is very very low down on the fun list.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Nothing that crazy about it when you live in an environment that averages 104-degrees (F) as daytime highs.

We'll respond to the incentive the market will provide in order to switch to alternative fuels.

Peak demand in the UK comes in the half hour 5:00-5:30 and occurs on cold days around December 21st.

Woo. Anyway it's dark then so solar would be useless, my point stands I think.
