NEW YORK (CP) - Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who led all rookie defencemen in scoring in November, has been named the NHL rookie of the month.
The Edmonton native recorded three goals and six assists last month as the Flames went 10-2-1.
Phaneuf edged centre Sidney Crosby and defenceman Ryan Whitney, both of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Washington Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin and Colorado Avalanche winger Marek Svatos for the award.
Phaneuf recorded his first three-point game in the NHL when he had a goal and two assists in a 4-3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks Nov. 7.
Phaneuf was Calgary's top pick, ninth overall, in the 2003 NHL draft.
