NEW YORK (CP) - Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who led all rookie defencemen in scoring in November, has been named the NHL rookie of the month.

The Edmonton native recorded three goals and six assists last month as the Flames went 10-2-1.

Phaneuf edged centre Sidney Crosby and defenceman Ryan Whitney, both of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Washington Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin and Colorado Avalanche winger Marek Svatos for the award.

Phaneuf recorded his first three-point game in the NHL when he had a goal and two assists in a 4-3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks Nov. 7.

Phaneuf was Calgary's top pick, ninth overall, in the 2003 NHL draft.

The Calgary Flames gave a boost to its offence on Friday, acquiring forward Kristian Huselius from the Florida Panthers for defenceman Steve Montador and centre Dustin Johner.

Huselius, who scored 43 goals in his first two NHL seasons, was passed over by the league's 29 other teams after the Panthers placed him on waivers earlier this week.

The 27-year-old winger, with just five goals and eight points in 24 games, is making $1.216 million this season.

Montador, 25, has played in 94 careerNHL games, registering nine points and 201 PIM. He appeared in 20 of the Flames' 26 contests during the 2004 playoffs scoring one goal with two assists, averaging more than 17 minutes of ice time with a plus-4 rating. Montador is making $450,000 this season.

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks acquired goaltender Maxime Ouellet from the Washington Capitals on Friday in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2006 draft.

Ouellet will report directly to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.

Ouellet, 24, has played in just one game with the AHL's Hershey Bears this season.

In 2004-05, Ouellet posted a goals-against average of 2.89 and a record of 15-20-3 in 40 games with the AHL Portland Pirates.

Ouellet has played in eight career NHL games with Philadelphia and Washington, recording one shutout and a goals-against average of 2.99.

To be honest, the fact I'm ahead in any of the offensive stats is a pretty sad reflection on your team.

We suck! Alfredsson is 0 for 2 games now. Jagr has a hip pointer. Koivu has a groin problem.

Prospal has been playing twenty minutes a game, apparently looking for oil at centre ice since he hasn't done much else aside from rack up negative p/m.

But we have three Oilers tomorrow against Boston. Are you happy with your team, Asher?

God, am I going to pay for this if it all goes wrong.

My assists are low, the others are fine.

Your team is sucking it up, except for your goalies.

IIRC your 3 oilers players really hurt your +/- specifically.

Your team sucks in goals and ppp. Your only saving grace is that Jagr, Alfredssson, Prospal, Koivu, and others all hit the skids or got hurt at the same time.

Oh I get it, your team is abnormally underproducing and mine is par for the course -- is that how you view it?

My team is underproducing as well, but yours is underproducing more. Injuries are going to rape you some weeks, you have tons of old guys on your team. The guys that aren't old are streaky, like your 3 Edmonton players.
