Tired of Hollywood movies

Most of the movies I'd recommend have already been mentioned by others, but I'll add two Dutch flicks:

De Dominee (The Preacher, 2004) -- biography about the godfather of the Dutch maffia -- almost as good as the Godfather films (but actually based on true events)
Simon (2004) -- tragicomedy about the unlikely friendship of an alpha-male drugsdealer and a gay dentist. Absolutely hilarious and moving at the same time.

Don't bother looking for other Dutch flicks, unless you're into gratuitous nudity (but then porn flicks would satisfy you more), Dutch cinema mostly produces ****e. These two and the already mentioned Spoorloos (The Vanishing) are in a league of their own.

I liked 'The Fourth Man' too, and 'The Girl With Red Hair'.

There's one I recall about a dentist who saw his family deported (and presumably executed) as a reprisal in WWII but I can't remember the name.


But I also like fun Dutch ones such as 'Amsterdamned' and 'Out Of Order'- the canals have never seemed so dark and dangerous....

Yesterday I saw 'Paradise now', a movie about two palestinians from Nablus on a suicide mission to Tel Aviv.

It's a recent film, and is a great watch.
