True, but I think the non-hotness of the Simpson's Comic Book Guy is a universal constant -- and you would not believe how many times I've seen him in Manila with a comely young thing on his arm.

You're right, there are some things that are universal no matter where you go.

I have some Filipino friends that go back there a couple of times a year, main reason being they can get alot of girls. Of course they bring back pictures, I have to admit that alot of the Manila girls are very attractive, they have alot of Spanish blood in them so they almost look like white girls, so I could see why those white guys you are talking about go crazy for them.

But I know what you mean, it does cause alarm when you realize they are going to be coming to America, where they have the opportunity to meet alot of studs who have the same financial means as their husband, but who also have the equivelent looks to their own.

I once witnessed a man in his early sixties, very heavy, married to a 25 year old asian girl, and this was in a public place, and people were literally laughing at them as they walked by.

I felt bad, I mean it is a very strange thing, but I thought it was rude for people to be carrying on that way.

Man this whole idea of flown-by-mail-reach-over-the-counter-purchase of a woman is just a concept that is wrong in my head.

One of my former employers, an Aussie, married a Thai woman when he was like 79, when she's thirtysomething. Granted, he's quite wealthy at the time, but still, 79's old. And he was very heavy too.

I don't think marriage is about ****-relationships, so the whole point about hottie mail-in-order brides is somewhat absurd.
If you just want to ****, you'd be stupid to ever even consider marriage!

Your friends problem isn't the marriage. Marriages are made for all sorts of reasons, very few of them absolutely "wrong." People are different, they interact in different ways, and the same person who might have a long courtship with person A could just as well have a equally successful marriage by a whirling, 2-month romance with person B... a marriage that could be as successful as an arranged marriage with person C.

So if your friend is comfortable settling into an arranged marriage, and she is too, then more power to them.

The problem your friend has is the war between tradition and modernism going on in his soul. If he, somewhere, deep down, didn't believe in what his mother was saying, he wouldn't be pervious to her blandishments. The "ultra-close" family ties, continual submission to the wills of a parent by their adult child, and the "non-American" living arrangements that he insists upon all show that, even though he has a good career and is brainy in the sciences, he really is far more traditional than his sister.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Even if it includes "arranged marriages."

                          Thoughtful post.

There is defintley a war going on. I actually talked with one of my Paki friends this week about this and he said this "war" is typical of Indian and Paki people that move to Western countries.

Girls are constantly trying to prove that they are "cool," but deep down (in his opinion) they are still the tradional Indian girls they were raised to be.

The idea behind it is not a bad one - they're supposed to act as inhouse marriage counselors. When one considers that the married couple may not have met and may be young teenagers its not such a bad idea. Think of all the stupid fights you (may have) had with your missus that could have been avoided if a cooler head was there to mediate.
