          Turkey federation condemns Swiss 'insults'

ISTANBUL, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The Turkish Football Federation has condemned the treatment of its national side in Saturday's World Cup playoff against Switzerland, fuelling tensions for the return leg in Istanbul this week.

The rising temperature showed as the Swiss team were given a hostile reception when they arrived in Turkey's largest city on Monday.
Switzerland are in the driving seat in the tie after a deserved 2-0 home victory with goals from Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos and Lazio midfielder Valon Behrami.
Turkey's federation (TFF) complained that Swiss supporters had whistled and jeered during the Turkish national anthem and that Swiss security officials had shouted at Turkey's players on their way to the dressing room after the match.
'The actions towards our national squad before the kickoff had a very negative impact on the match atmosphere. We in the TFF condemn these actions,' it said, adding the Swiss Football Federation had not shown the required sensitivity.
Turkey's complaints about their treatment in Bern have received lots of media coverage and the Swiss team felt the backlash when they were confronted by angry fans at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport.
As the players stepped off the plane, airport staff held up a Turkish flag and a placard saying 'Welcome to Hell 5-0' in what has become a cliched slogan to greet supporters of foreign teams visiting Turkey.
Police struggled to hold back vociferous supporters as they chanted abuse at the bemused Swiss players passing through the arrivals hall.
          SNIFFER DOGS
State-run Anatolian news agency said the Swiss spent two hours at the airport because of delays at passport control and baggage reclaim. Turkish television said police used narcotics sniffer dogs to inspect the luggage of the Swiss players.
Monday's statement also said force was used to prevent Turkey coach Fatih Terim from entering the room where the post-match news conference was held on Saturday.
Hurriyet newspaper published a photograph of a Swiss security official and quoted her as saying she had signalled for Terim to wait a couple of minutes while his Swiss counterpart finished answering questions and that Terim had stormed off.
The TFF called on Turkey's supporters to behavem well at the return leg in Fenerbahce's Sukru Saracoglu stadium despite these 'insults'.
'The best way of responding to the bad treatment is on the pitch against our opponents. We ask our 42,000 fans who will fill Sukru Saracoglu stadium to cheer as loudly as possible but to avoid any behaviour which would incur punishment,' it said.

                • in 1988, Neuchatel Xamax (then the best team in CH) played Galastasaray in the 8e of finals of the champions league (or was it UEFA cup?) they won 3 - 0 at home. in turkey, their hotel was shot at with flares, music, and car horns all nite long. their car was pelted with rocks on the way, coins were thrown at and hit CH player who had to be bandaged up. the captain of the team did not want to play and had to be forced out there, the ref refused to stop the game, and the uefa officials said it was normal that coins asnd other objects were thrown at players. they lost 5 - 0. the protest gave the CH the win, but then UEFA inexplicably reversed their decision. 10 years later, the guys in charge of that decision said that they recieved death threats and were forced to let the 5 - 0 stand.

the backbown of the team are all swiss-french (Johann Vogel, Phillipe Senderos, Ludovic Magnin, Patrick Mueller). although there might be some gay swiss-germans, i wouldnt put it past them. (Zuberbuler comes to mind)

                        • Michael Owen is probably gay.

Are there any famous openly gay footballers now? There was a rumour going around that Sol Campbell was gaying it up with Freddie Ljungberg.
