  • I don't understand high-end wristwatches

I was traveling this week, which meant spending more time than I would have liked in duty-free shops around the Pacific, and I realize that i just don't understand the whole high-end-wristwatch thing.

I really like watches, and have a number of them, but, except for my antiques, I have never spent more than about $125 on a watch. They're all aesthetically pleasing to me and others (I get compliments on them all teh time), and they all keep perfect time, as far as I can tell (and if I can't tell, I suppose, then by definition it doesn't matter).

So I can't figure out why on earth I, or anybody, would spend $650 on a Tag Heuer, or $1650 on an Omega, or $16500 on a Rolex.

I'm sure they work well, but how well does a watch really have to work? It has to show you the time, and remain accurate over a long period of time; hell, a Timex does that just fine, as does every watch I've ever owned from Fossil, Guess, Seiko, etc. And it's supposed to look good but, really, they all look pretty much the same, and not especially good (particularly if you compare them to glorious watches of yesteryear).

    Does anybody actually understand this?

It's the same reason women buy jewelry, it's a status symbol.

I use my cell phone as a watch.

They are no longer simple chronographs.

As far as I can tell, they become some sort of status symbol, along the lines of expensive cars, big-arse yachts and monster houses.

Why would anybody want to drive a Lamborghini in Hong Kong, other than to show off?

Oh, I guess if you keep them around long enough they become antique pieces.

I have one $100 Swatch that I got in Paris. It looks great.

So I can't figure out why on earth I, or anybody, would spend $650 on a Tag Heuer, or $1650 on an Omega, or $16500 on a Rolex.
What are you talking about? I picked up a Tag Heuer for about $10 on Canal Street in NYC...

UR - yeah, I get that they're status symbols. But they are different from cars, for example, in that a Mercedes really does perform better than a Ford Focus -- but I can't believe a Rolex performs better than my trusty Seiko.

Asher - The notion that they serve the same function as jewelry for women is interesting, because most guys I've met who go in for these kinds of watches tend to be hard-nosed, uber-masculine types -- generally military or ex-military. I wonder if I should bring the similarity to their attention?

            watches are teh stupid...

even if I don't have my cell phone, I am usually never away from somewhere where I can be aware of teh time...

plus, I have an uncanny sense of time...

I can even set the microwave, walk away, take a piss, do something else, and return, without watching the timer, at the EXACT TIME MY FOOD WILL BE READY AS IT COUNTS DOWN TO ZERO

Yes, a $10 quartz watch works as well as a very expensive watch with a diamond studded face. Even maybe better.

You don't want to wear an el cheapo plastic watch to some important events, such as interviews. Beyond that though I think they are all the same.

Perhaps some could be considered as art pieces so they can appreciate in price.

I use my mobile as a watch too.

I have never understood this showing off with jewelry and stuff. What exactly does it prove? I saw a £1m hat in the paper today filled with pearls and other such expensive things. I just found it ridiculously vulgar. Why?

I find it much easier to just wear a digital watch. Screw status.

Well, the little hand points to the hour and the big hand points to the minutes - it's really that simple

My $20 watch from Kmart has lasted me forever and it looks very sharp.

There is one major advantage to high-end watches ... the crystal the watch face is made out of is unscratchable. I have a $200 Casio G-Shock, low end of that line, and I can't scratch this if i TRY ... every other watch i've ever had scratches almost immediately, as i'm sort of klutzy and have poor depth perception (running into things a lot).
