    I reckon you can disable DHCP and configure your network by hand. You can get the DNS by checking your ISP's website, usually.

    For example, set your desktop to 10.0.0.11 and your notebook to 10.0.0.12. Use the router's IP as the default gateway. Use 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. Put in the DNS servers. Done.
