    I thought wireless connections were BANNED in ISRAEL.

    ??

    i've never HEARD that wirless connections WERE banned IN Israel.

    Oh, okay. So you have a switch/router combo (I am assuming it's one of these instead of a stright switch) and a wireless access point.

    I have no idea, to be honest. It's just an unbranded box with 8 LAN entries in the back .

          Does it have a RJ-45 receptacle labelled "WAN?"

            No, it has:

            '1' '2' '3' '4' '5' '6' '7' '8'.

              In that case the WAN socket is either 1 or 8.

              Why do you have a box with 8 anyway, most I've seen here for residential use only have 4.

                Then, it is just a hub or switch

                ADSL modem <- Lan Cable -> Hub/Switch

                Hub/Switch <- Lan Cable -> Ancient PC

                Hub/Switch <- Lan Cable -> Wireless Router

                  aha, just as I thought! Thanks pchang!

                  Now, my next questions are:

                  What will I have to configure then? The ADSL modem, or the wireless router?
                  will I be able to make my wireless network encrypted and generally working?

                    It is quite possible that you will not have to configure anything. The factory defaults will probably work. However, if you want encryption, you will have to configure the wireless router to choose your encryption key. You must then enter this same key into the laptop.

                      I don't know if that will work, usually a cable/ADSL modem goes to a router first to change packaging.

                        The ADSL modem can go directly into a computer. This means that it already can assign IP addresses via DHCP and handles outbound routing and NAT. Connection to a hub/switch first just means that it will be asked to handle DHCP, outbound routing, and NAT for more than one IP device.

                          Yes, the ADSL modem can go directly into a computer, but not directly as an Ethernet node but needs to go through a program such as PPPoE. It also doesn't do NAT (at least mine doesn't). The DHCP, I reckon, comes from further upstream.

                            hmmm, i was going to post a new thread but this one seems to be related enough.

                            Me and my roomates are having issues with our router setup. We have a Linksys Wireless B router which lately has two modes: disconnect every two minutes (gaim seems pretty reliable about logging disconnects) or not let me access certain, usually highly used websites. If the latter phase, none of us who are connected to our network can access google or the university website. We can, however, connect without problems using the neighbors network or by connecting a cord directly to the modem so we know the problem is with our router.

                            So right now, i'm in the market for a new router. What are some decent models that i can get; preferably reliable and reasonably cheap for a broke ass college students budget.

                              Its also true that a modem can feed a switch rather than a router if the IP address's are fixed. When my cable co switched my line to dynamic IP I had to install a router.

                                Dont write it in stone but last time I looked a basic router with 4 ports and no wireless was around $20. Just stick with a major brand. If you've been using linksys why not stay with them. Mine are Belkin but they're wireless (802.11b/g) and still less than $40.
