The mother of all Modernist public places: Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY, podium level, completed 1973.
The farther back the 20th century recedes, the more you shake your head and wonder what was going through their minds. Perhaps the imperial impulse is endemic to all societies, whether they are theocratic despotisms or bureaucratic democracies. You acquire enough wealth and power and terrible things happen. Gov. Nelson Rockefeller wasn't a bad guy. He did it all for the sake of aesthetics, being a "modern" art connoisseur. The architect was Wallace K. Harrison, better known for the UN building in Manhattan. What they came up with was a place that only a Toltec could love.
Considering I took this shot at lunchtime (12:15) on the first nice spring day. . . and considering that the four towers are full of toiling state workers, the emptiness of the vast plaza is rather remarkable. Conclusion: it totally sucks.
As America (and New York with it) enter the era of political psychosis attending the downside of the global oil curve, this place will surely become a favorite spot for the bloodletters.

Doesn't look that bad. A bit spacey perhaps but otherwise not displeasing.

Personal taste, obviously, but I don't find it that bad. I live about a five minute drive away from it and don't think it's an eyesore. To me, the much worse buildings are those that are those that don't try to be innovative in any way and still fail miserably. I think the buildings in Louisville and London that have been posted are far, far worse. Personally, I think one of the ugliest buildings in Toronto is the CN Tower. A gigantic concrete hypodermic needle/phallic symbol that sticks out like a sore thumb on our rather mundane skyline. A five year old with no imagination could have designed the thing. I guess it's just a pet peeve of mine - I loathe all observation/communication towers like it without a single exception.

Or this one. This would make a terrific background in a surrealist painting, but as an actual building it's ludicrous.

Just look at that portal, what the hell were they thinking.

Don't knock La Sagrada Familia It's the trippiest Cathedral out there.

Besides, it'll never be finished. Catalonians would have nothing to joke about if it was completed.

I'd second Empire State Plaza. That **** is just straight up ugly. In the same vein, that library thing on the Seine in Paris (too lazy to search it on google).

Also, la Sagrada Familia is awesome.

The Empire State Plaza is the quintessential ugly 60s/70s design mentality. It's an architectural disaster. The concourse below it is also incredibly tacky and dated. It's one of the bigger eyesores of upstate NY. It makes Schenectady and Troy look postively pleasant and down to earth.

It's full of cheap frills and faux-elegance. But of course, if you got traits like that with a centuries old building, people consider it a monument.
