and in all that time i think i used the gym twice.....

and considering that i actually get it for free as a staff member for the last 5 years.....

i have never known where to start...then i found out, that as staff we also get free fitness assessments and programmes.....

so now i have finally started .....Yay....

my fitness trainer told me though, that i didnt want to lose weight so much...i just needed to tone it.....

well i hope toning will reduce my stomach, coz i dont wanna have a fat gut sticking out oof my wedding dress in about a years time or so (not engaged yet, though plan to be soon - just waiting for him to ask my dad...lol)
There's no such thing as "toning". You're probably just talking about losing body fat. This can be done with cardio.

The fact that he actually said that proves that this man has no idea what he's talking about. There are only two things you can do to your body when it involves working out: build muscle and burn body fat. There is no exercise that "tones" your muscles. To get that toned looked, you must simply lower your body fat %. Building a little muscle won't hurt either because the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn throughout the day.

Jon, when you go to them don't take a flask of whiskey with you. Also, those weights and weird machines are for exercising try doing some of that. I know that the chicks in spandex are distracting, but try and overcome it. You can do it man, hang in there.

toning is also generally associated with working the small muscles, isntead of just the big ones

My point is that working the small muscles doesn't give you the toned "look". The only way to get that look is to lower your body fat %. Also, just because you do compound exercises (squat, bench press, chin-ups, etc) doesn't mean you aren't working smaller muscles at the same time.

my health actually goes to **** if I don't exercise fairly often

as in 3ish times a week

if not, I gain weight, I become so weak that simple tasks are difficult, my bad choelestral goes up, my blood pressure gets worse, etc
