If I had just been though a flood I would rather be on terra firma rather than a boat myself...

Kinda hard to help someone who will not make an effort to help themselves.

      FYI
Most of these people have been getting free giveouts from the government most of their lifes.
They have come to expect everything to be given to them.
It is a case of "white mans guilt" that this social mentality has gone on for so long.

Where is the incentive to better yourself if everything is given to you without effort.
What a load of crap, I bet most of those people worked hard all thier lives. THE RIGHT'S WHOLE WELFARE QUEEN BS IS A MYTH!!!

If I had just had by home obliterated, was missing half my famiy members, had my bank destroyed so I could not get any money, no job, and was living on a cot on the 25 yard line a cruise liner would by about 1000 levels above what could reasobably expect to be given as aid.

        And they have shuffle board!

"how bout time that a white man had to serve blacks"
Knowing New Orleans, it might have been the first time that many of them had seen such a thing. Houston's a whole 'nother world.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

An offensive thread by Docfeelgood. Who would ever have predicted?
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Yeah: "thays"? "suvivers"? Has Texas done an' gone become as accent free as a Hollywood TV show?

                  Interesting slant.

I don't doubt that among the survivors are the normal proportion of the lazy, greedy, fraudulent asshats and downright disagreeable people that you would in any moderately large population of people. The shock is starting to wear off and people will begin to act according to their own personalities. So none of the things described suprise me just as stories about survivors performing remarkable acts of sacrifice and kindness do not shock me.

Within every population there is some good and some bad people. No news there

Free handouts from the government? Did you see where they lived?

Why don't you ask rich people whose parents pay their college tuition?

I don't know about rich people but for most of the regular folks that I knew, parents paying (or helping pay) for college tuition was contingent on taking a full course load and performing to a certain level, plus getting employment in the summer vacation

Way to miss the point. Hardly anyone doesn't take a full course load as it is, and if you don't perform you get put on probation or suspended by the university in any case.

And the big difference is that the parents could help pay for tuition. For other people it effectively puts university out of reach unless there is a reasonable loans scheme. In the US it is basically beyond most poor people.
