Why would a photographer send his pictures to two different wire services?

edit: Answer? He didn't, given that no such person exists.

The photos were by two different photographers working for two different news agencies, The Associated Press and AFP/Getty Images. But they appeared together on Yahoo News, and they sparked a flurry of blog entries, emails and calls contending the captions were unfair to blacks.

che was correct on the basic point, though. The AP guy saw his subject loot a store. The AFP guy saw his subjects pick up floating debris.

Same pricinple, though. In one case, a reporter saw the looting taking place, in the other he didn't.

How Cokes float through the water though, is a mystery.

The USS Battan arrived the day of the hurricane and has been running helos non stop since. The day after the USS Shreavport and USS Ashland headed down. Those three ships are equal to three airports with 5000 aid workers each, also loaded out with food (I was berthed across from the Shreveport, it was ALOT of stuff). There are now seven Navy ships off the coast.

The day of the storm Bush dispatched a Lt. General to hed up the relief efforts, and from all accounts he has been kicking ass and taking names since then. There are over 10,000 soldiers involved in ground operations.

There are over 200 military helicopters operating in NO. Note there are over 50 news choppers flying around doing nothing.

And of course the fact that 90% of the people in this devastated region are evacuated and cared for, what failure do you speak of anyways?

Yesterday was the first day that significant food and water actually arrived in NO over four days after the fact...

Yeah Baatan is there - started rescuing people on Wednesday (2 days afterwards) and managed rescuing a whole 200 people in about three days as well as distributing food and water. Very commendable...

But a total drop in the ocean of humanity that is still suffering in NO...

PS Am I the only person round here that is alarmed that a US Navy person (I am correct in that assumption?) cannot even correctly spell the names of ships he is serving with!!?

Probably. Most of us are alarmed that despite the enormity of the fubar, he still can't bring himself to criticize those responsible.

It doesn't matter what the photog says now. I'm frankly sceptical. This has been a major flap, to the extent that the agency has asked that it's photo and caption be removed by Yahoo and others.

The point is that the majority of "looting" is simply hungry people, abandoned by their government, trying to find food - black or white. But mostly black.
