No, but quite a few died of dehydration. You're from the South, you know what the heat's like down here.

On Sunday Morning the "MC" (for lack of a better word right now) had been there and said that the situation there was worse than what the TV can show.

        • According to one of the morning shows, the wind never topped 100/mph in NOLA. That's a CAT 2 storm! The levies are supposed to be able to hold that!

This wasn't a worst case scenario. This was just a total **** up.

I have pointed this out in several threads.

Though I haven't seen any reports of people dieing of this either. All the deaths I have heard about are directly from the flooding/winds/collapsing buildings/storm surge, nothing fromt he aftermath.

And the levies did not break because of the hurricane itself, whatever CAT it was. The flooding along the Mississipi as the storm moved in is what broke the WEAKER levies on the inland side. The seaside levies withstood the hurricane as designed.

                  • I'll ask again, since I never got an answer:

Do we have any pre-hurricane estimates of the number of homeless who were living in New Orleans?

                      • 17k to 19k.
According to service providers' statistics, 17,000 to 19,000 men, women and children in the New Orleans area are homeless.

                        Facts About The Homeless

                        In New Orleans Approximately:

33% are families; most being women with children
30% have jobs: part time; seasonal; minimum wage
23% have a chronic mental illness
                        50% have substance abuse problems
85% are natives of Louisiana, 15% are non-natives
Less than 10% of the homeless population is homeless by choice or "hard core" homeless.

That doesn't matter. The water was being pushed into Lake Pontchartrain and down against the south shore by the more powerful parts of the storm.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt.
