We had an entire social realism movement. We still do.

It was disdainfully called Ashcan Realism. John Sloan and George Bellows and maybe Robert Henri come to mind. The problem with that kind of realism is that the rich people who buy art don't want to be looking at pictures of the culture of the great unwashed. It doesn't get a lot of attention.

I'm not quite sure what the point of the thread is but I'm damn sure I'm not gonna compare the modest breadth of my art knowledge with Molly.
