It was disdainfully called Ashcan Realism. John Sloan and George Bellows and maybe Robert Henri come to mind. The problem with that kind of realism is that the rich people who buy art don't want to be looking at pictures of the culture of the great unwashed. It doesn't get a lot of attention.
