Condoning the looting of 'basic necessities' is a slippery slope the way I see it. Base assumption, "looting is looting, case closed".

I can however see why one would make exceptions for the very most desperate of situations, but frankly, baby diapers is very far off from that. And so are any food items at this point.

So-called basic necessities seems to be a very arbitrary term, open to individual interpretation to an extent I don't think many people would want to see...

So, when are these store-owners going to be able to get back to these stores, and what condition will the goods be in then?

Let's get real here. NO is under 10 feet of water and it's rising rapidly. Stuff sitting around in stores is going to be wasted anyway. So I don't give a rat's ass if it's "looted" or not. It's not as if these store owners aren't insured anyway.

Frankly, I think the national guard should be coordinating the "looting" of stores that are going to be destroyed by the flood anyway and get those supplies to the people in need.

Who cares? Authorities should be focused on saving people at this point. So long as looters aren't endangering the lives of others, to hell with them.

Oh, and the footage of the looting they showed on CNN was NOT of people taking TVs. It was all groceries and clothing items, and other such supplies (like toilet paper).

Come on, what the **** is someone stuck in downtown NO going to even DO with a TV now? If they're dumb enough to encumber themselves with such a thing, then a double to hell with them.

You're not stealing from the government that you love to protest about, you're stealing from real people.
As Mrs. T. pointed out, some will steal merely to steal.
In any event, society has determined that theft is wrong.
We don't stipulate that piss poor planning on your part supercedes this decision.
You can apply all the mass rationalization to it that you want.
                It's wrong, end of story.

That's right Attack choppers aren't much use in rescue missions, let them deal with the looters.

Ah, it's refreshing seeing the self-righteous (and, coincidentally enough, Republican) folks who are sitting high and dry in their comfy homes posting away on the internet pontificating on the right and wrong behavior of desperate people who are trapped in a disaster zone.

Quite agree. Instead of sending in rescues teams, they should send in heavily armed units with orders to kill to protect toilet paper and other stuff that people may find it nessecary to steal such as clean water, food and even diapers.

I wish that were the case.

Theft is still theft to me anyway.
